Default Coolant temperature problem

I changed the coolant today to Honda spec stuff type II today, the last time i changed coolant in a car was going on 8/9 years ago.

I have a scangauge and I have been monitoring the coolant temperature, i have noticed the temperature seems to jump up and down (but not too erratically, but does jump about a little) cruising at say 30mph it will sometimes be 94c and then stay around 84/86c and jump up again, cruising at 70mph it will stay at around 86c mark. It has never gone above 3 bars on the dash.

Prior to this it would always be around the 87/88c mark and maybe fluctuate a little, i left the car idling for a minute or 2 and i witnessed it jump upto 106C!!!.

After i let the cool down, i topped it up IIRC it took exactly 5 litres. Maybe i didnt bleed it correctly?

Could there be air in the system? - how should i get rid of it?

Thanks.

Air.

IIRC, there is a bleed point by the inlet manifold. To be sure, have a search, which would also detail the method

There is a bleed point Matt, close to the right hand side of the block on the intake manifold.

I followed the guide, but I'm unsure if i undo this bleed bolt now or a little later on?

I know the coolant will be very very hot but unsure if to do it when its warm or stone cold?

What to do, what to do

I'd let it cool down a wee bit, just so you don't scald yourself (or wear a gauntlet), then bleed. Obviously water and air expand when they get hot, so the air should be at a higher pressure, therefore it should pi$$ out nicely

Give the rad hoses a good few squeezes to, that will help push any slugs of air about once the stat is open.
And not sure how these are plumbed, but just in case keep the heater temperature set max.

It's most probably air I agree, but you may also have a dicky stat.

Just had a fiddle, let off the bleed bolt on intake manifold, a bit off air came out and tiny bit of coolant and coolant level dropped when i had the rad cap off - topped it up hopefully this has sorted it.

Going to take it out for a short run now as I'm using it to goto metro centre tomorrow morning and last thing i want is coolant problems.

Steve, i didnt squeeze the rad hose - oops.

Cheers

I think you'll need to repeat this process a couple of times before all of the air out

Sticking the heater on full whack with the top down should alleviate any woes

Cheers matt.

It seems to be a bit better though I stuck the heator on, hot air slowly turned to cold air on full blast - this was when it was idling.

Coolant temp doesn't seem to be fluctuating as much better still seems to be running hotter than usual 95c sometimes.

Though it's idling at 101c.

Repeat process or what?

Thanks
