I wonder in what sense it's a "recon" gearbox?

I bought an 04 gearbox from a breaker after mine was struggling to get into 4th, 5th and 6th. I can't imagine a rebuild is ever worth it, and you obviously need to get the thing in and out either way, which I think was about 6 hours worth of labour. Honda wanted £4000 BTW.

OK, so now having been properly stitched up, I am now sourcing a replacement Gearbox.

A question to all you guys in the know:-

Was the gearbox changed between model variations at all, or can I fit a gearbox from, say, an 03 model into my 99er?

Once again, thanks all for your advice!

Dembo, did it go in with no mods required??

I'll be fitting it myself, so I don't want to end up cocking it up

They all fit all years Gravy.

That could have been seen by just looking at it, surely!

The guy seems constantly skint - has had trouble honouring his promises on time, and if he had those tyres on those wheels you're selling, clearly didn't have a clue.

Sorry, I hope you get it sorted

You do still have some rights when buying a used car privately, namely that the seller must not misrepresent the facts:
Private sales rights

Assuming I have the right advert, the statement "Car has been faultless for me" would not be true if the synchros were already gone when the advert was written. However, you would have to sue and the onus would be on you to somehow prove that this was the case.
