Default Crunch when going into vtec when cold

Right just got my S a few days ago, went out for a spin with a friend and floored it after a few hundred yards from cold. I was in 2nd or 3rd and when it reached 7000 rpm or so it just stopped accelerating and all I heard was a crunch. This happened twice. The rest of the drive no issues. Next time I drove it no issues. What could this be?

The only thing I could think of was that it slipped out of gear.

Any other ideas?

Anyone else have something like this?

If you haven't warmed up, there's a limiter at VTEC revs as well as at 9k

It won't engage and you'll bounce off the 6.2k mark (think it's 6.2 - somewhere between 6 and 7 anyway)

Wait until you've got 3 bars on your engine temp (well, 2 strictly speaking, but best to wait till 3, it's only a couple of minutes).

No idea what the crunch was though, probably your face hitting the steering wheel?

Hey thanx I'm very new to this car and tbh I know you should warm your car up... naughty me, I wa surprised that it would not go into VTEC but at least I know. This car does warm up very quickly and so I know I can wait, as you say 2 mins and its ready.

Thanx

No problem - the dealer or the person you bought it from really should have mentioned it.

I presume you were shown the petrol release pull and the secret compartment?

Ha they never told me anything tbh, and I have not had time to read the manual.

I know the petrol release pull, just to the side of the drivers door.... secret compartment??? No idea :-)

poor car - you are hitting the rev limiter for the low cam.
Always try to get 2-3 bars on the temp gauge before vtecing on to the hi cam.
Take it easy until you warm the tyres up to or you are going to end up on the Carper list

Just too add -

Since I got my SPA oil temp/pressure gauge installed; It takes a lot longer too warm the oil up then just three bars of water temperture. I would say an average of about ten minutes (depending on oil grade) before its up to its normal temperture!

It's amazing what you learn from modifying!!

Remember, the tempo gauge is the WATER temp gauge, not the OIL temp gauge (which more cars really should have, the S is sadly lacking in this respect, not even an oil pressure gauge. Even my A6 has an oil temp gauge). You should wait a good 10 minutes before reving over 4k rpm in any car.

Nearly ALL the damage done to engines is when it's cold. A car that spends 100,000 miles at high revs if properly warmed up will prob be in better condition than one with 30,000 miles that gets thrashed from cold.

Good point (both). I've become used to the fact that 99% of my journeys don't actually involve the opportunity to VTEC until about 15 minutes in anyway
