Default A delayed entrance!

Well after owning our S2000 for a couple of months, I've realised I'm yet to actually put a picture up!!

Finding a good S2000 within our budget was quite trying, never before have I viewed so many misdescribed cars - I usually get it right first time and make sure I ask all of the right questions before I even leave my house to make a viewing, but I had many a wasted journey this time around!

Part of the problem was that my other half really liked Nurby blue, but didn't like the blue interior. I wasn't too fussed, we had looked at one with the blue interior and it didn't stick out to me as being horrible - just something a bit different from the usual black. In the end she compromised and a nice facelift appeared just up the road from us!!

Not had chance to do a full on photo shoot so only have this shot for now:

At the moment this is my other half's daily driver, so I haven't put loads of miles on it, but she loves it. She loved her 330ci before this, and also mk Mk1 Eunos that I sold at the same time - but when I asked if she still missed them, she said the S2k more than made up for it!!

On the road I find that the car doesn't give anywhere near the feedback that my Eunos did, and I'm probably still a long way from finding the cars limits (probably a good thing coming into the winter!) as I find how the car steers on throttle a little unnerving initially (passive rear steer?), but I'm sure you get used to it.

On the list is to get the wheels refurbed (one or two of them have the usual crazed lacquer), new floor mats, a geo check/adjustment and maybe some braces.

There is some noise from the clutch that I didn't notice when we first viewed the car (you can barely hear it with the roof down), but with the roof up there is a noise associated with the clutch. I'm guessing it's clutch release bearing as it goes away when you push the clutch in, although it's not the usual rattle you'd get from a clutch release bearing, more of a rattle/mid pitched whine. I guess it could even be the input shaft bearing. Without removing the gearbox, is there any test to tell whether it's the clutch release bearing rather than isb?

Is it normal for these to have an amount of gearbox/diff whine with the hood up? Nothing excessive, but it's there.

I do have the fluids to do a diff & gerabox oil change, so will be interesting to see how much this quietens things down - just need to order some crush washers from Mr Honda. I'll probably check the valve clearances at some point to, as doubt they've been done in a while - if at all!

Next thing to decide is whether to go with some winter tyres on this, my 944 or just buy a cheap runabout for the winter. I don't really need a car for work in the winter, but my other half does and I'd rather she didn't use the S2k if she doesn't have too, just in case!! Not to mention the salt!

Lastly, can anyone recommend someone to look at the alignment in the Suffolk/Essex area?

WELCOME!

I see you are Suffolk/Essex...

Chippo does some meets in Essex and I try to arrange a few each year up in Norwich.
You would be more than welcome at any of the future meets.

If the S2000 transmission sound is anything like the sound the eunos makes when you lift off something is very wrong...

Hi Minvo - thanks!! That would be great

Gary - I don't remember the Eunos making any abnormal noises when lifting off, maybe just a bit of whine from the diff and usual decelleration. My eunos did have some trasnmission noise and was very nothcy from cold, but it never got any worse, and I never felt it was excessive. I'd describe the S2k as being similar in that respect, but someone who knows these cars better than me could probably pass better judgement.

This noise has the symptoms of a clutch release bearing, but doesn't quite as rattly as they have on other cars I've owned. I suppose I'll find out one way or another when I do the clutch, just at the moment it seems a lot of effort to replace a clutch that is working fine, just to get rid of an annoying noise - assuming it is the release bearing. I appreciate if it is a noise coming from the gearbox it could cause more damage, but I suspect the noise would get worse over time in that case.

If it's like a slight whirring rattly noise when the car is idling but disappears when you put your foot on the clutch it's the release bearing and nothing to worry about as they all do that. If it's very noisy though then there's a definite issue there.

Yes, I'd describe at as more of a whirr, just not the rattle I have had from other cars. I did once read that if it was a release bearing it would go as soon as you start to press the clutch pedal, but this doesn't go until at least half way.

Unless it gets a lot worse I won't worry about it too much, I'll just bite the bullet and plan in a clutch replacement for when I have the time. There is no sign of slippage, but it is possibly the original (80k) as I have no record of replacement.
