Oh dear - 2 Mills Honda, Wirral. Appointed NSX dealer - meant to know what they're doing. Says 'Castrol Magnatec Diff oil' on the invoice. I'll be speaking with them tomorrow to get them to clarify.

If it says diff oil then it must be the right stuff.

Don't want to worry you unduly. Just never heard of Magnatec diff oil, though that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Keep us informed.

This thread has kind of cloned itself on the 'under the hood' forum, but I'll start a new thread on 'Diff oil' on this board to keep you up to date with a few interesting developments.

Only if its oil designed for a hypoid diff (I have no idea what magnetec diff oil is and there are a lot of front wheel drive diffs out there). As Castrol make rwd diff oil badged as hypoid oil I do wonder if this is the right stuff. Hypoid oil will be quite viscous and smells heavily of sulphur ("stinks of sulphur" would be a better way to describe it - you can't miss the smell) and the container should say something like "hypoid EP 75 - 80". If I were you I would take a look at a container of the same oil type as they have used and check it out.

Well, I got my car back today complete with new diff - and thankfully Hondacare paid for it. Apparently the diff oil was 'heavily contaminated with metal fragments', the LSD gears were 'noisy' and the crown wheel pinion bearings were worn. Interesting - my car has only done 26000 miles, but the diff has only done about 12000 miles, as the previous owner also had a new diff put in. The reason stated on the records in the service history for why he had it replaced? Metal fragments in the diff oil. Hmmm - I can't help thinking that I'm going to be needing a new (4th) diff in another 12 000 miles.

And the slight sting in the tail - I understood from the dealer, and hondacare when I spoke to them, that the 2 hours labour involved in diagnosing the problem would be covered under warranty so long as the problem they found was covered by the warranty. Yet - even though the claim for the diff and fitting it were upheld, I was forced to pay them 128 quid for the initial inspection before they would release my car! Now if that is normal practise, then it's annoying that I was given false information in the first place. But has anyone else here ever had to pay the inspection costs for an upheld claim?

By the way - lower - new engine? Does jeremy Clarkeson know about this??
i would not put too much store in the reason for failure being fragments in the diff oil. if the diff starts to get noisy then there will be fragments in the diff oil as the various components wear and break up. if your car has had 2 diff's already, might be worth asking the qeustion of why they keep failing.

and no, i doubt jeremy clarkson knows about my engine. but then i am not the only one who as had an engine blow up. there seem to have been a spate of them lately.

The fragments were probably the effect and not the cause. I'm worried, from what was said in this post earlier, that the wrong oil may have been used causing this problem

i have to say, wrong oil generally is a concern. my brother in law no works as a mechanic at kettering honda. he says that when the mechanics change the oil, they just fill up the engine with whatever oil barrel is around without paying any attention to whether it is the right grade of oil.
