Why not query it with them, - they'll know who you are when are if you pretend to be a new customer. I'm sure they'll honour the other quote to keep your business.

Even if they do, i'd still spend some time ringing around for a cheaper quote elsewhere.

A lot of places will give discounts for 'new' business so it works out cheaper to take out a new policy than to renew.

I used to swap between Elephant and Admiral each year to get the new business discount. They were both part of the same company.

Try Tesco insurance ...... it is exactly the same as Direct Line but with a different wrapper.

Direct Line offer vandalism damage which does not effect no-claims don't they, - providing they don't bump up the quote too much, it might be worth having this even despite the excess you'll still have to pay

I've always found it cheaper to get a new online quote rather than renew.

Directline quotes generally always seem cheaper because they automatically add an introductory discount (10% or whatever it is at the moment) on the assumption of you being a new customer. They'll add that percentage back if you are an existing customer even if you accept the quoted figure it gives.

That might not be the only reason for the diference you are seeing with the amount being so high though!

I just sorted the Direct Line People!

I told them I was going to Admiral as they had a much better quote (which was true!) and they threw a cheaper premium, less excess, guaranteed hire car + and 0% at me!

I had to accept ;0)

Result!

Indeed, I don't think I've ever renewed, new quotes were always cheaper.

All insurance companies do it, they "hoik" you in to get your business then hope you renew the following year at a higher price.

I've been with Direct Line and their sister company Privilege for many years now. Every year I do a re-quote and every year it is cheaper than renewing! At first I used to call them, but they told me that there are extra internet discounts so they can't match the price on the renewal - How daft is that?

Anyway, never had any problems taking out new policies each year.
