Default Discarding the Spare Wheel

Hi Guys

I am back from holidays and I am thinking about doing some more mods to the car. I am considering taking out the spare wheel and using the space for some car audio stuff. Seeing how the spare is only rated at 80 km/h max and if you have a rear puncture then you need to swap the wheels around!!!!

Also I have got 18"s on the car and am not sure how the spare would do.

What I was wonder is has anyone ever used the instant foam repair kits. How good are they and how far can you go on them?

I am worried about gettting stuck on the motorway as I do London to Brighton and back every weekend.

What do you think?

I asked about this a while ago Nads. The general thought on here was that most tyre fitters wont repair a wheel full of gunk, lol.
Im still thinking of ditching the crappy joke tyre n just callng the AA when my 18's get a puncture.
What audio gear you thinking of sticking in there, is there room for a sub?

I've removed my spare, and don't have roadside assistance (at the moment).

I don't think the AA will come out and tow you away if you fail to carry a spare wheel, well not for free in any case. I think this also applies if you carry a spare wheel and it is not inflated.

I have doubts about the foam - on all the cans I could find, it said it was only to be used for small tyres (can't remember the size, but basically supermini size and no bigger it seemed.
I took the spare out when going to France and put in a couple of cans anyway, but I don't know if that would have worked, the spare is back in now as I don't trust the foam.
And there is the case that many tyre fitters won't deal with it because it's nasty stuff so I understand.

In all, there is no satisfactory spare wheel solution for the S.

Wouldn't want them to tow me away anyway Rahula!

Even if you had foam in your tyre, isn't it still restricted to a low max speed?

I think you'll be fine with the spare and your 18s You should have lower profile tyres on the 18s than the originals to retain the same rolling profile, therefore the spare will still be the correct size to run on the fronts as before.

I don't find the space it takes up a hassle either. If really pushed, you can always remove the tools from their holder and stick them inside the spare (wrapped in cloth to keep them quiet) and then remove the tool holder to get a LOT more space in the well in the middle.

I'm not aware of anyone putting a sub in there - its going to be an interesting sub enclosure carpentry session Some of us mount our amps and cross overs in there (as per my ICE pics in my sig) and then its a question as to whether you got for 8" subs which can be installed in the corners of the boot, as per the wlaurent enclosure also in my sig, or lose the tool well and pop a 10" in there for an bigger bass kick. There are a few other unique sub installs - one guy has his installed where the compartment is between the drvier and passnger, and another has recently installed his at the end of the footwell!

You could install the amp in the boot vertically if you don't want to ditch the spare - take a look at the stereo install sticky thread on the Electronics forum (or ask Shortbloke to post photos of his install )
