Nothing wrong with string, we still use string to plumb lift shafts and guide rails 20 floors no problem +- 0.5mm. And often show up builders whose use lasers and claim to be spot on , my arse!

Yes it pays to update your equipment noodles
For aligning the center of the car I used the really bright yellow Amnesia fishing line, being that easy to see I don't trip over it quite so much.
