I know various plates have been on the market for a while which are supposed to work, any body know of these? and do these work?

No.

The only one to my knowledge that actually does work, has some sort of screen which mists up when a current is passed through it. Only fits certain types of car from my knowledge.

just remove the number plate altogether..........I've seen an Elise locally with no front plate
