Default Driving Standards

I know this has been covered before, but I feel the need to rant.

Today, Easter Monday, I've had to brake sharply on 3 roundabouts - all because people have been ignoring the give way rule.

#1 Baldock A505 roundabout - police ATV barrels through roundabout - very aggressive driving. No lights or sirens, so I expect pure plonker non example driving. We pay these people

#2 Baldock Tesco roundabout - XJS pulls out & gets a taste of my new Fiamms. On the positive side, I got to try out the new horns in anger.

#3 Letchworth - women goes through roundabout at bottom of hill without checking. This would have been an emergency braking manouver had I not anticipated it. She probably didn't notice or care that she'd almost caused an accident.

I wonder how many police force personell are out trapping speeders today ?

I was nearly killed near in Tomintoul on Friday.

I was overtaking an Audi and a Seat in one go, and as I started to pass the Seat at ..er...c 70mph, the moron pulled out into the middle of the road at about 40mph.

The road was too narrow for me to go either side so I had to stand on the brakes (more than in any car ever before ) and pray. I was absolutely convinced I was going to shunt him into the next county, and must have been literally inches from his rear bumper.

The side of the road was covered in grit and sand, yet the tyres never even hinted at locking up - I was as amazed at the car's performance under emergency breaking on a poor surface as I was at the moron in the Seat.

I would have had a serious go at him were it not for the fact that he may have claimed I was driving too fast - fast I was, but not dangerously so for the circumstances IMHO.

Just unbelievable

The thing that worries me, is I reckon some people do it deliberately, like speeding up when you overtake them, or not indicating then turning right at roundabouts.

I declared it National Arrogance week because of that one!

I know for a fact that people do this, I was in a work colleagues car doing about 45 in a 60 zone when an Impreza overtook (clear, straight road, good visibility etc.) perfectly safely EXCEPT he would have been doing 70ish to go past.
Numpty colleage (bottom of the range toyota blandbox or somesuch) decides that Scooby driver is going "too fast for the conditions" and that he needs teacing a lesson.....so he accellerates in order to leave the Subaru driver on the wrong side of the road for as long as possible. When Mr. Subaru gets past (thankfully the blandbox was about as powerful as an asthmatic gnat so it didn't end up too dangerous) he gets flashed "because he could kill someone going at that speed" despite the fact that once past, he slowed down to something approaching the 60 limit.
Despite trying to reason with the guy, he was convinced that the dangerous driver in this situation was the one overtaking BECAUSE HE WAS SPEEDING, and felt duty bound to teach him a lesson.

I fear the 'Speed Kills' message is beginning to bite (BTW, numpty colleague also did 45 through the following village which was a 40 zone), but the real message, that INAPPROPRIATE speed is the problem, is sadly too complex for the numpties to absorb.

Time to buy that island I fear......

Surely in some knut does overtake in a dangerous place, one would slow down to let them past, as you say?

I'm glad these self-appointed self-righteous brothers are prepared to put themselves at risk. We should send them into truly dangerous situations. Think of the money they could have saved by going into Iraq and giving Mr. Saddam a piece of their mind!
