ECU reset
Having has a dud battery in the car for a week or so presumably this will have had the same effect as performiming an ECU reset. The Tech FAQ says that after a reset you should "...find a long stretch of road and give it redline through the gears. The ECU will quickly learn where to set its fuelling and ignition timing."
Having recently picked up 3 points for a harmles 94mph and not yet being into tracking, I'm a bit paranoid about redlining through all the gears. If I don't, what's the result? If it doesn't learn where to set its fuelling and timing for redline in 4th to 6th what happens next time I get chance to push it? Although given the paranoia this might be a bit academic.

When I did mine, I only redlined it up to 4th.
It still learns, just not as quick AFAIK.
Same with the idling. I CBA'd hanging around and letting it run through a few fan cycles. I just let it learn through the course of normal usage and it's fine now.

Hi Stiggy - the redlining thing is just a personal preference of mine. I will edit the guide to clarify it a bit better.
It's by no means essential, and it will learn by itself over time anyway.
When you reset it just defaults to a base map, over time the sensors monitor things and adjust the fuelling / ignition timing accordingly.
If you want to do it i'd just go for 2nd 3rd and 4th for a few times. The ECU doesn't actually know what gear you are in anyway.

Thanks MB. I think this is less to do with the car's actual performance and more to do with wanting to understand things better. If the ECU doesn't know what gear I'm in, why bother with 3rd and 4th? Why doesn't one gear suffice?

Just because taking it through the gears is a longer duration than repeatedly doing it, say, 3rd.
Again, doesn't really matter that's just my way of doing it!

When mapping my STi and Evo I hit 140 leptons.
It's quite worrying on normal roads - although quite empty!
Bob the mapper does about 4 cars per weekend and doens't seem to get caught!
Picture a scoob with cables gaffer taped all the side of the car, from exhaust / bonnet into the car, and a bloke with a laptop in the passenger seat, wearing det cans
