Default Electrics

Seem to be having a bit of trouble with the electrics. The radio/cd keeps cutting out for no apparent reason and stays off for ages before suddenly working again. I thought this might be something to do with the speakers. Now I'm not so sure.

Also I often lock the doors when I'm in the car and now when I lock the drivers door the passenger door stays unlocked . Central locking works fine.

Sort of thinking I need to check out all the electrics. Is this something I could do myself - with possibly some help from a nice friend or does this sound like a garage job.

If it's something simple, like a loose connection or a dodgy fuse, it'll be easy to fix, so you could cheak all the connectors by wiggling them to try to replicate the fault.

Once you have done this, you are into wiring snags, which are notoriously difficult to track down, especially intermittent ones. If you can face the weeks without it and the re-mortgage to pay for it, throw it to a garage.

If not, bodge it till it works and sell it!

When the engine is running, check the voltages coming off the battery.

It should be ~14v .. a lot less and you'll have issues (the system runs at 12v, the extra 2 charge the battery) also check the battery terminal connections, and the earth straps.

Is it a stock headunit?

I've just replaced the battery - is it likely something will be wrong there? Stock headunit, never had it out

Is the battery done up properly? A loose connection on one of the terminals would give dodgy problems.

The ancilliaries are powered from a separate cable to the +ve terminal.

Check it is clean tight & well-vaselined (oo-er missus!).
