Default Electronic Dipstick?

Is there such a thing? Demon Tweak draws a blank (I mailed them too).

I've googled and seen loads of patents.

There must be a dipstick that we can put in, which flashes a light/displays on a gauge when we are low on oil.

After losing one engine to oil starvation, I'd like to prepair a bit better.

I know I could just check more often. But I'm fecking lazy.

I dont think i would trust an electronic dipstick. I would still check the level manually just for peace of mind.

mk2 astra gte 8v had one, easier to have a level sensor fitted on the sump as on most new cars

It would be very difficult Ben.

I think some of the new BMW M cars have them.

Much easier to check the dipstick when you switch the car off / before you drive, or use an oil pressure gauge with warning light for driving.

If its' fine on the stick and then loses enough to sieze when driving, you just have to count yourself as fooking unlucky.

I have a pressure/temp gauge .. they were reading fine

I've seen (via google) that BMW and Porsche do them now.

I've have thought a 3rd party would be easy .. bend a new dipstick into shape, cut to a "min" level with pliers, and then run the cable out the handle to a gauge.

Would mean pulling apart the sump and mounting it somewhere.

Hoping to pull the old engine out on Saturday if you are about.

Then I'll swap the ancilleries over and get the new one in asap.

The dip stick is probably never dry though in reality, hence they can be unreliable...

In the case of your blow up, had you been checking the oil?

Was there an internal blower leak - ie the intake drinking oil?

My view is that if you are checking it regular, and it drinks enough to starve it then it's just bad luck - that's a hell of a lot of oil

Mine was due to the SC drinking, and 2 loose plugs (the coil pack were soaked).

I'd not checked the oil in a while and typically, the weekend before, I'd put off doing a full oil change.

Both my 306 GTI6 and my 206 GTI 180 had them, needless to say that didn't mean that I trusted them!
