Default Embarrassing MPG

I'm still in newbie mode so I'm topping up and checking my fuel consumption very strictly.
On a journey up the M3; round the M25 and up the A12 to Bentley and back I got 36.1mpg. How embarrassing is that.
In my defence I'll say traffic was heavy - but moving at a steady 60mph and there was not a lot of opportunity to V-Tec.
The tank had Optimax in with a half tank of Esso equivalent.
When I refuelled at South Mimms on the way back I got my 36.1mpg
Mind you - I needed to. 96.7p for Ultimate!!!!
I'm getting Optimax for 91p in Hampshire (and paid less than 90p in Derby last week)

Very embarassing!

I've driven gently now and again in traffic, but still never get anywhere near that. Are your calcs pretty accurate?

I'm a sad git. I can account for every penny of fuel that has gone into the car barring that used to do the 195 miles it had on the clock when I picked it up.

I'm averaging a little under 25mpg.

I was consistently getting 24.5 mpg so stopped measuring. I think that driving with the airbox cover off may have hurt it a bit as the last few times I got the odd reading in the 23's, but it seems to be forever in that 23-25 range so I can't be ar$ed anymore ...

If I do an average tank (a bit of playing, a lot of stop start traffic, and some motorway cruising) it's about 27mph.

If I do a long motorway cruise then it's similar mpg to what you mention - 3-400 miles per tank, as opposed to 240 normally!
