Default Embarrassing question

After months of having it I have finally got round to double coating it with Hammerite (bloody thing should have been rust resistant to start with). So I go to fit it last night and fail. Seems incredibly fiddly unless I am missing a trick. Er, help.

Yours,
Numpty DIYer

With difficulty!!! I joined two cable ties together so I could get my hand in and wrap them round the old grill and then slowly tighten them up till it fits into place, then cut off the excess. Not sure there is an easy way.

Wish I'd painted mine before putting them on. Gotta take them off at some point as they've gon rusty. May just get some stainless mesh and be done with it. At least I've got the old ones as templates :-)

Good Luck.

Jez.

Yeah, they charge enough for them and they're not enev rust proof. Not worth the money. Steer clear and buy from another manufacturer is my advice - although hopefully the Hamerite will do the job. assuming I can the bloody things. Still not sure how you managed to fit them though.

Let me help

Double up a couple of tie wraps and preform a U shape with two lots. Rest these on the spar of the existing grill at the far right and left hand sides.

Slot the grill in under the no plate first, push the bottom edge towards the car and feed both ends of one of the tie wraps through the holes leaving a gap of 3-4 holes between them. If the head of the tie wrap is large than the holes you will have to make the U with the first tie wrap already through the grill (in the right position )

Once the first one is on pull the grill forward to make access to the seond one easier. Once they are both on losely position the grill where you want it, tighten the tie wraps and trim them. Stand back and admire.

The grill tech ones are difficult because the holes are quite small. I can do a set of three on one car in ~ 5 minutes now! (too much practise! )

BTW the Grill Tech hole size reduces the air flow to ~40%!

If you are still struggling PM and I will email the instructions for mine!

When you guys get fed up with the rust have a look at the link in my signature

That will work! Two things though!

Long tie wraps are usually wide with big heads so they will not go through the holes in the Grill Techs and because of the large head they stand out more!
The ones I use are 2 mm wide and very difficult to see unless you get close up!

I took a brute force approach (was in a rush). I screwed two of those plastic right-angled brackets used for assembling kitchen cabinets into the outer edges of the air dam, and screwed the grill into these.

They went through my grilletech holes fine. I have diamond grilles - they have better airflow and look nicer
