Brian, I meant it picks up differences in fuelling "quality" and adjusts ignition timing to suit. Maybe could have worded it better Ive dealt a lot in this subject

Im monitoring knock and AFR quite carefully, for when the S/C goes on Appreciate its a bit after the event, but at least I will know about it and be able to sort it if need be. Relying blind on the knock sensor without "seeing" it is a little risky.

My point on the Mugen is that a lot of people run them with know knowledge of how it works, and what fuelling requirements it has. knowledge is half the battle!

Sorry Mark - not having a go!

As to the knock sensor and F/I. Raeding it or not, it's tuned for the noise characteristics of the engine without the charger, and then is only really accurate at low rpm. So high rpm with boost, where the risk of damage lies... the knock sensor isn't much help. It's your choice whether to rely on it for your Supercharger install. As you say, knowledge is power... I'm just trying to help you out with a little more... I'd perfer not to see another UK engine die after a Vortec install...

No engine differences AFAIK - the difference will be in the ECU mapping. The engine doesn't really mind what grade of fuel it sees, to an extent - its the ECU that governs the fuelling and ignition timing so that will be the change I would think.

Earlier cars dont say they cant use anything but 98, if you look on the fuel lid it states it will be ok but the ECU (or engine which is incorrect) will adjust and you may notice a performance drop.

They may have removed this to avoid confusion, and probably better marketing wise. May have put some people off thinking they can only use 98!

The ECU uses a knock sensor to detect fuelling changes - hence why things like Mugen ECU's are suicidal in my book (doesnt use knock sensor at all!)

Mark - my handbook and sticker on the fuel filler flap both state 98RON minimum - no mention of 95RON anywhere (2001 car).

I believe that there are no differences between the engines on pre (including) and post MY01 cars, but I do believe that the mapping on the earlier cars is set up specifically for 98RON fuel, whereas on the later cars it was changed to accept 95RON fuel with minimal impact on engine efficiency - as Turtle alluded to.
