Default Engine knocking

Hey all.

I'm in a fix
Or rather I'm struggling to fix!

My 2001 S's engine suddenly started knocking loudly.
No oil light, no warning, engine not under much load at the time - was in top gear, downhill, 50mph-ish.
Pulled straight over and got it flatbed trucked to the main dealer.

The dealer wants big money to take it apart to diagnose.
The price is simply not cost effective, would be cheaper to get a new (read: 2nd hand) engine and have that fitted.

So now I'm looking for a one-stop shop ideally.
Somewhere I can go and they'll take a look and either fix the current engine or fit me a replacement.
I'm in Nottingham. Any thoughts?

I'm fed up really, it's been a few weeks now since it happened.
I'm getting very tempted to sell as is, Ebay I suppose
I know I'll take a hit to the wallet doing that.

Any thoughts would be really appreciated. Thanks.

What's the oil level on the dip stick? I get the impression that you won't see a warning light until it's too late.

Check the oil level & whether there's anything other than oil in the sump.

Hope it's nothing too serious!

Another recommendation for GarageR.

If I lived in the north, my S would go to him for this sort of thing
