It's normal. Not sure if anybody's worked out what it is, but mine's always done it both before and after an engine swap.

Think it is the starter motor - I had mine replaced under extended warranty and the problem sounds the same as yours. Best way I could describe the sound is like winding up a toy friction car - you know the ones you zoom along the ground a few times and then let go!?!?

That was on a MY04 also.

Cheers

Alistair, which dealer did the replacing for you? I only ask as I have an extended warranty. Thanks.

You're describing *exactly* an issue I had with my previous car (A3) for 7 of the 8 years I owned it (from new).

It was so common they wouldn't even look at it under warranty - if it's the samr thing it's the starter motor failing to cut out quickly enough. I was worried it would add wear and tear, but 8 1/2 years later it was still going strong, and never failed to start.

My S doesn't do it, HOWEVER if you depress the "Start" button for a second or two a little while AFTER ignition the starter will briefly kick in... while not recommended that you do this often (or for very long) you can check and see if the noise is the same to reassure yourself it's the starter...

Hi

It was Chatham Honda in Abbeyhill in Edinburgh.

No questions asked - took one listen and organised it straight away. Still charged me 1/2 hours labour for 30 seconds diagnosis though :-(

However it was worth it so as not to have the screeching noise every time you fire up.

Cheers
