Default Engine Noise

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on this one.

I have noticed that my engine doesnt sound incredibly smooth on tick over both when cold and when warm. The rev's stay consistent but there is a slight clatter that seems to be intermittent. It's a hard noise to describe but is more noticable when cold.

It's not the valve clearances as I have recently done those and its definitely not a tappety sound when cold but the sound is similar in pitch and tone.

Are there any common things that I could check out? There are no performance issues with the car its just that the noise is annoying me so I want to try and get it sorted.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Alex

Not the Timing Chain Tensioner?

Check if the sound is coming from just under the rocker cover at the front of the engine on the exhaust side of the engine.

Ben.

I've only ever heard a clutch release bearing creak so have no idea. It definitely sounds like something that is in time with the rotation of the engine if that sheds any more light?

I'll have a listen in a bit when I go on my lunch break and post back on that one. I was wondering whether it could be that as a lot of people seem to post about TCT's being replaced or in need of replacing.

Does mileage make a difference to this? My car has done just over 46k and its on an 04 plate.

Thanks.

Is it like this? I've been meaning to check my valve clearances myself to see if it smooths it out a bit.

Ben, I think you may have diagnosed it. Just had a listen and its definitely at the front of the rocker on the exhaust side.

New TCT then I take it? It's been like it for a little while now but I'm guessing if it's not replaced then it could have potential to fail and cause the chain to jump?

Noisy TCT is generally just an annoyance as opposed to an indication of a failing part. Brand new ones get the same thing within a few thousand miles.

There seems to of been success with some sand blasting of the worm gear and sheath parts, over in the US section somewhere!

Try changing your oil first, I now use Castrol Edge turbo diesel as recommended by other owners on here. I used to use mobil 1 and mine was noisy too.

Did that last month and no difference.

I've used Silkolene Pro-S and whatever Honda have put in it recently and there has been no change between them...
