Engine Oil Additive
Hi All
Was intending to do an interim oil change this weekend as the car's 6 months old (it's done just over 5k miles) to play on the safe side.
Having read the FAQ's, I know I should stick to mineral, so I went out and bought some Halfords 10W/40 mineral this lunchtime. Then off to the Honda dealer to get a genuine oil filter (in case questions are asked at the first service) and some of the molybdenum additive that is needed pre-first service.
However, the dealer has told me that this oil change shouldn't be done as the "special" oil that Honda stick in the engine when the car is new also has extra additives to help the bedding-in process. They were reluctant to sell me any moly additive as they advised against the oil change.
I am not convinced about this "special" oil, and still want to go ahead with the oil change, so what I'd like to know from those who have done this before the first service is - can I buy this molbdenum additive from anywhere else other than the dealer, to add to the Halfords oil, and if so what is it called?
Is it 'Slick 50', as this is readily available, or do I have to go back to the dealer and demand the Honda stuff?
Cheers.

The service schedule lists an optional oil change at 4,500 miles, so god knows why your halfwit dealer is telling you that!

My (very limited) understanding that the only thing "special" about the "running in" oil is precisely the additive which you're enquiring about. I assume that they would just stick it in themselves if you had taken the car in and asked them to do it at 4,500 miles
Sorry, can't help with whether it can be sourced elsewhere.

no its not slick 50. do not use that stuff in your engine!
the oil in the engine during the running in period is mineral oil with the molydenum additive. if you want to change the oil then you can replace it with mineral oil again and there is no reason why your dealer should not supply you with the additive.

AlHere's what you need to know!
The Honda supplied Molybdenum additive is made by Hamp.
It is Honda Part No. H082099991U.
This is it:
And here's the leaflet that comes with it.

I had my oil changed at 3,500 miles, and again at 5,400 miles and asked the garage to give me the bottle each time to be sure it had been added.
HTH
Be careful with addatives as decent oils really don't need anything added to them.
This is the very reason oil companies don't make them as they spend millions on research into suitable oil addatives:
here's a scary thing!
