Default engine problem? wierd noise

Help - i need some good advice pls!!!

I seem to have a wierd noise coming from the engine after giving the car a good run - 20mins or so. It only appears when i'm stationary/ waiting at lights etc. Difficult to describe but the noise sounds like something mechanical vibrating. I just visited a Honda dealership in Bexleyheath and a guy had a quick look and listen then mentioned tappets>? He also asked about the oil levels. I do normally make a point of checking them but havent since my last service only a month or so ago. He looked at it and the level was low - so he suggested this was the reason for the noise, something to do with low oil pressure. Thing is, the oil level does seem to go down more than i would expect.....and the guy at the dealership suggested this could be worn piston rings!! sounds expensive to me. There doesnt seem to be any nasty smoke on start up.
I'm gonna top up the oil and hopefully this will stop the noise (so the technician says).

Can anyone share some information pls? Thanks in advance.

How long have you driven in that month, Oil consumption is based on milage more than time.

1 litre /1000miles would be of no concern on an S2000 IMO

My s2000 uses quite a bit oil, but it has 100k on it.

Noise, probably either: TCT (timitn chain tensioner), Low oil or injectors id say.

The 'tech' sounds like a cock to me. The oil pick up in the sump will
either suck up the oil or it wont, the second it wont you get the low
oil pressure warning light on. So if its in the xxxx range on the
dipstick then I cant see that making a noise. More likely to be
chain tensioner. Tappets and clicking injectors would be heard
before 20 minutes.

I understand the earlier S's used a lot of oil and was quite normal.

Its not a heat shield rattling is it?

Sounds like something loose to me too, if it takes a while to materialise it might be something thermally expanding.

Can you park the car and get the bonnet open / under the car. Really give it a thorough "earing"

Sure its not the clutch? Does the noise get better with the clutch in / out?

Thanks for all the replies....it is helping, but also a bit confusing!

My car has 65K miles on it and I am doing about 400-500miles a week so based on this I guess it is reasonable to expect to get through a fair bit of oil? My last service was at the start of March and oil fully topped up - now oil level is below the low indicator so I suppose this is standard after about 1500-2000miles?

Since visiting the dealership I have stuck 2 litres of oil in which seem to be just about right on the dipstick - but the noise I mentioned earlier still occurs after a little drive. Maybe not quite so noisy tho. So, according to the Honda technician - the noise should have gone completely.....and it hasn't, so whats the next step?

Clutch in or out - doesnt make a difference.

If its the chain tensioner - is that a big job? On the other hand - tappets...same question. Any idea of cost?

Thanks again

Hi James,

I'm taking my black 2001 S2000 to that same garage on Friday morning lol

I get the odd rattly/buzzing noise when you start the car, it makes that noise for about 5-6 seconds and then disappears.

Record a clip with your phone or something and post it here. Sounds like something silly, honestly.
