Danny,

I'm glad to hear that they are going to cover the damage.

It really made a mess in there. I presume that the photos are all taken from underneath, with the oil pan (sump) removed. Is that the whole of the con rod? It looks like it snapped at the little end, then the whole lot has twisted round the crank and ended up in the sump. It's quite a good view of the remains of the little end in the third picture. If the con rod snapped in the middle, I would guess that it would have been forced up the bore.

Looks like bits of the piston pin left in the sump in fourth picture, unless the whole piston disintegrated. I believe the bottom picture is the oil baffle, which is fitted around the oil pump. Unfortunately, it is not possible to see the oil feed, as it would be in the base of the cylinder bore above the crankshaft.

I would love to see what the piston looks like underneath and also exactly what is in that pile of broken bits.

I am surprised that they are not changing the head, with that much metal floating round the oil!

Hello,

Yes these pictures are from underneath, we will take pictures next week from the head, the pistons and everything what we can photograph.

Bydeway, if the head is damage, than also that we be replaced.

Danny

Danny - you must have felt like Panis when his BAR Honda expires - all the smoke appeared at 200km/h. Very glad Honda is doing the right thing and supporting the rebuild.

Are they any clearer what was the original cause - if the piston seized then it must surely be still stuck in the block.

With that amount of damage I would demand a new engine!!
When something as serious as that has happened it could of put stress on a lot of the other parts.

You have a good point Matt.
I doubt very much if the remaining connecting rods have been magnetically particle inspected for cracks or the crankshaft be checked for excessive run out. This is even more important in such a high performance engine.

Tif have you heard the new update (oil/plug) will result in an extra 1 yr engine only warranty as a show of good will?

Honda has told me this.
Should I have gotten a recall notice from my dealer on the "oil modification" ?

It depends on your chassis number - I have *NOT* recieved my recall yet - but I know its not far away, sit tight, it`ll happen soon for us all affected.

I believe that Honda tend not to ship whole engines to the dealer. They have already agreed to fit a new short block, this will include crank, pistons, etc. I hope that Danny can get a new head as well, it seems that will depend how much damage his dealer finds to it. I would be worried about what crap has got into the VTEC mechanism.
