Default Engine Rattle

Ok, here's one for the collective knowledge...

07 with 18k on the clock. At idle there is an intermitent (SP?) rattle coming from the front of the engine towards the top. Originally I thought it was the serpetine belt tensoner, but nope not that. Brought it to the dealer who said it was the TCT. They replaced it and the noise is still there. It sort of sound like arattling heat shield, but I am certain that none are loose. The dealer wants to strip the front of the engine to see if it is the timing chain or a guide.

Has anyone has a similar ecxperience or have an idea of what the noise may be? I've tried searching on the forum, but there are LOTS of engine rattle threads.

Thanks!

Just idle? Any other times it does it?

Obvious question sorry but have you checked oil level?

I only ask as mine is noisier to me when it's 200ml below max level.

Could be like the noise Gaspode's 1st GT100 was making just before Honda decided to give him a new engine.

Make sure the dealership is aware of the problems that a few others have had with similar age cars. They might need to refer to Honda UK so they can get the exact details and hopefully rule out engine failure.

my 07 had a knocking noise which resulted in honda replacing my engine under warranty only just last month. Yours might be something simple as mine was quiet at idle and only made the noise at about 2500rpm

Oil level is fine. Turns out the rattle is there at all engine speeds and if it is hot or cold. Oil is clean and golden, even after 3500 miles since the last change. Noise has always been there as far as I remember. Apparently the TCT showed no abnormal wear when it was changed.

What I should have said is that it did not show any polishing or smoothing of the worm gear and looked like it should with 18k miles on it.

The noise in my car had been there for over 7k miles and never got any louder, it was first audible at 2500rpm but after 3500rpm it got drowned out by the rest of the engine noise, but when listening through stethoscopes it was easy to here that it was still there. If you are under warranty then you'll be fine as Honda paid out for a new engine, clutch,VSA control module and DBW throttle sensor on my car all in the last 6 weeks under warranty.

Where was the noise coming from and was it a bang, knock, or rattle?

It was a light knocking noise which appeared to be coming from the top of the engine, but when Honda attatched microphones to the engine they said it was actually coming from the bottom end. I could also feel the knocking through the clutch pedal when it was depressed. Personally I would not even try to figure out where it's coming from just give it to Honda and tell them it's making a funny noise and you want it fixed.
