Default Final drive and boost

I've had a set of 4.56r gears in my final drive for 5-6 years now, unfortunately i 'think' the diff is on its way however i dont think the ring and pinion is damaged which is what you get in a final drive set - my mate reckons its not the noise he would associate with damaged teeth so the ring and pinion will likely be fine.

The final wasn't cheap and it would be a shame to get rid of it and it helped a lot NA, however i think because the car sits 300-500rpm higher in each gear and you have to change more often its actually limiting the performance of my car since its boosted and circa 330BHP/210lbft torqye @ the wheels and believe the spread of torque is affected so other than standing start low gear situations its decremental for my performance.

What do you folks think?

I'm not into standing starts 1/4 miles so perhaps going back to 4.10 would be better on the road and from a shift down when wanting to go 'some'. More in gear acceleration.

I may try and salvage the final drive or just replace it.

I've now embargoed the car whilst i decide what I'm going to do.

I might be interested in your gear / pinion if it's in good order It may not be if it's been munching metal parts from your LSD bearings.

I also have a full low mileage OEM diff but was planning on keeping it.

Yeah I agree, its not a grinding metallic noise which is annoying as it makes diagnosis even more difficult it could even be coming from the half shafts . When i did it (as past posts will verify) i spent around £200 on new crush sleeves etc from Honda so it wasn't just 'whacked' in and the diff oil has been replaced every year. With anything i wouldn't want to sell it if it was knackered - I treat people like i would like to be treated.

If you interested then drop me a PM Mark, perhaps if you wanted it you could extract the ring and pinion if it was broke then i could refund you? would have been interested in your diff but as i say drop me a PM.

I'm leaning towards just replacing it but i did like the final drive

I would go back to 4.10 especially on a boosted car. You might get the idea at the beginning that your car lost power but in reality you will go faster since on a hard acceleretion you will earn a lot from changing gears less often. Mpg will be much better also on a trip

Thanks Chris

Its a tough one, but it boils down to changing gear more often and sitting higher in the rev's and restricting the 'spread' of torque, from 150 lb ft to 'just' over 250 is a 100 a big jump - I'm willing to be corrected and there is the fact that my SC doesnt make a lot of low down torque.

As i say standing start, 1/4 mile really doesnt interest me and 1st gear on my car is pretty much useless and 2nd goes damn quick too!

Yeah MPG will raise by a small amount, thats a welcome addition since my MPG has gone down even more with these bigger injectors, there isnt a great deal i can do partial throttle tuning wise either.

Cheers

Hi mate, I don't like the sound of coming round your house for a drink first whilst dropping the diff off - which you said would have a surprise in it and would include an apple and a piece of rope?!? - it wouldn't be rohipnol would it?

What do you mean?

Is this a pulp fiction - Z's basement type thing?

"I'm gonna go medieval on his ass'

Different context, but still....
