Agree regarding concept of racing shoes, but you don't need to buy a poncy Sparco type brand.
I use a pair of pull-on thin soled moccasins, easily stored beneath the drivers seat.

For gloves I too use cyclists fingerless gloves, and the palm pads are comfortable cushions on long journeys.
For al fresco driving on chilly days a visit to an outdoor shop (not a Blacks or Millets) produced a pair or close fitting fine wool gloves with intergral finger and palm plastic dots. Superb grip and comfortable
