Default Flashing Engine Light

I've had a solid light for a while now, telling me of a Random Misfire. I've done a few things to try to aleviate it but to no avail, and I'm buggered if I can spot the misfire.

Sometimes when it's damp, and usually after I've removed the oil cap and put it back on again, I don't see the light for a few days.

Very occasionally, it starts flashing. I switch off, and switch back on again, and it goes back to solid.

Here's the rub: I've sussed out that it starts flashing when the car is rolling, out of gear, with no throttle, and dragging the brakes - for example in a down hill traffic jam.

Any ideas what the car might be doing to create Fatal Error, Blue Screen of Death type warnings flashing ECL warnings?

couple of quick points - car has done 99k miles, only ever has Momentum or V-Power, fresh oil to the correct level, coolant OK, new OEM plugs (about 4k miles ago), airbox etc all intact.

have you read the codes I guess you might if you know it's a missfire. If not I have a spare Scanguage code reader if you want to borrow it at the next meet.

Thanks chap,

The codes I have had are P3101-4

"Random misfire on cyl 1 (2,3 and 4)"

Along with "Random misfire on all cylinders"

Agree with Dembo's question.

Have you had your valve clearances done lately / ever?

Can you hear any pops if you let it idle and stand behind it?

Rolling down hill and you'll be idling.

aahhhh now you mention it

When cold, there is an occasional *phut*, and it pops a bit when I lift off the throttle.

Doesn't seem to do it once warm though.
