Thumbs up Front Wheel Speed Sensor

I've been told by Honda that the reason for my ABS light coming on is a front wheel speed sensor?

Has anyone ever experienced a fault with one of these before?

Is it something I can get from breakers?

It is!

Looks like a small dongle with a wire coming out of it. Head is near a toothed wheel on the back of the hub.

Whip the wheel off & have a look.

This is what I was given by Honda...

... now I'm even more confused. Looks like an ABS sensor to me

Can anyone else shed some light on this...?

Sorry, versteh' nicht:

Your ABS light is on, requires replacement of an...

...ABS sensor!

The dongle uses the toothed wheel to sense the rate of acceleration/deceleration of the front wheel, so it knows whether to re-apply or release the brake on that wheel.

Ja, Ich verstehe nicht.

Ich brauche Hilfe (That's the extent of my German Vocab. )

Had the car serviced yesterday and told them to look at the ABS light that's on.

The lady at the service desk said "You need a front left speed sensor".

"Right", I said, "...is that an ABS sensor?" because I had that replaced recently.

"No, it's a speed sensor, sits on the Hub and is related to the ABS". I think she was quite pleased with her attempt at a technical description.

I asked for the fault code but she didn't know it.

I thought may be there is an additional part to the ABS sensor as there is a plug on one end?! Like something that fits between that plug and the plug on the car.

Obviously overcomplicating a simple issue here...?!

Jetzt Ich Versteh'!

Nope, she's talking Rindscheiss. (I just made that up!)

The dongle is sealed, to prevent water ingress. I can't believe the toothed ring on the hub needs replacing either!

I'd suggest that there is a high resistance somewhere between your new ABS sensor, due to a broken wire or corroded connection, if the same faults keeps popping up. You'd be bery unlucky if your new one were dodgy too.

After work I took the wheel off to have a closer look. It seems very simple and the only thing I can see that looks electronic is the ABS sensor so it must be that?!

The part that sits over the toothed ring as you call it seemed very dirty. Also is there suppose to be a gap between that part and the teeth?

Just a small correction. The sensors or the ABS system don't measure acceleration/deceleration of the wheel and modify the braking based on this. It only checks if you have locked up the wheel and then releases the brake. Once the wheel starts rotating again the brakes are re-applied (assuming you still have your foot on the brake). If the wheel locks-up again the brakes are released again and so on and so on, until you hopefully stops!!
