I'm not an owner yet but should be soon. I'm interested to find out what petrol folks use. Can you run on normal unleaded or do you have to use super unleaded?

I've read that alot of people use Shell Optimax - why?

Thanks

Because it's 98.7 RON - it's higher octane than 97 RON super-unleaded. Higher octane means the engine runs more smoothly and supposedly generates (marginally) more power. It also supposedly helps to keep the valves cleaner too.

There is an article in EVO regarding Optimax and all the findings for cars using the fuel were excellent, well worth a read.

My first fill up (yesterday) was with Optimax.

95 will be perfectly fine for those times that you can't get 97 or better but I wouldn't use it as my regular fuel

The ECU will retard the ignition on 95RON, meaning the car develops less power (and other, more technical things I am not qualified to explain nor understand).

You should try to get Super Unleaded or Optimax when you can, the other reason to get Optimax is that it's generally cheaper than Super.

I use Optimax whenever possible, and 'ordinary' super unleaded when I can't get Optimax. If all else fails, I carry a little bottle of unleaded octane booster in the boot (useful for trackdays when sods law says there won't be a petrol station selling SUL within an hour's drive).

For reference, there's a label inside the petrol filler flap saying 98 RON minimum. As stated earlier, you can run on 95, but you'll lose power.

bigfecker,

I think you find most of us give Optimax a BIG

Not good with the technical stuff but just know that it makes the car go faster and is good for the engine in terms of keeping the valves clean etc.

Enjoy the car when you get it - be hard not to

Cheshire,

The 0-60 of the S is definately faster than the 737 After that the 73 begins to pull away (literally), but the 737 doesn't have VTEC - now that would be cool

I'm always on the lookout for an airfield with a road that runs along the side so that I can get a mate to take off in the 737 and I can drive down the road listening to Berlin - Take my breath away aka Top Gun (my favourite film) - ohh and I'll be wearing the leather jacket and aviators as well
