Default Fuel gauge query

Hi all

So I just got my first S2! A 2006(56) non-VSA model and I love it!

But the fuel gauge is acting strangely. I filled up to the max last night and drove 22 miles home on the M4 at a constant speed of 70mph in 6th (didn't want to drive any faster as I'm still getting used to the car). I woke up this morning to go work, turned the car on and found that I'd lost 1/4 of a tank! I started freaking out but I had to go to work so drove in...but as I'm driving the fuel gauge gets higher and higher to a normal looking amount. Overnight, I was parked on level ground and drove on level ground so I don't know what it could be. Anyway, I've searched around and it seems to be a common problem with general consensus suggesting that fuel contacts may needs cleaning but I can't find anywhere with instructions on how to clean them.

Can anyone give me a hint? Or have a link with instructions at all? Apparantly it's easy but I have minimal mechanical knowledge.

Much appreciated!

This happened to my S2000 when I first bought it, I also had the same problem towards the end of my ownership with a Civic, I just left it and it corrected itself, must be a Honda thing.

Common, and well documented issue.

Most people (including myself) just fill up the tank, and after 200 miles (in my case), fill up again, as I know that I roughly get 220 - 230 miles from a tank full of SUL.

as above but I fill up at 240 miles, regardless of what the gauge says.

I think it works a bit like my old Elise one. It's not so much how full it is but how full it is given your current driving style i.e. Drive it like your nan for a bit and it seems to go up.

I noticed this, weird though as it doesn't have a trip computer so its (I guess) not making predicitons based on MPG or anything.. maybe it just does a rough calculation based on how much throttle you've given it over the last XX miles or something... but does seem to change based on driving style.. .hmm

Much appreciated all.

I was really worried I was leaking fuel or something. I just remembered I parked up at work which happens to be in a slight incline, as in the car would roll forward without brakes, and the gauage showed completely full.

I think I'll follow the advice to fill up every 250ish miles.

I'm so glad I bought this car, so so so much fun!

I've sat in motorway jams and the gauge drops alarmingly, once on the move it climbs up again, I reckon it's Honda's version of the lottery.

Its a range indicator based on the driving style.

Light on =1.8 gallons so I tend to make sure I fill up within 15miles of light being on.
