Default Fuel Light - what's the range?

I am always anal about making sure I have plenty of fuel as my fuel gague does nothing and then seems to drop off a cliff?

For whatever reason I had been meaning to fill her up for few days but kept on putting it off when the fuel warning light comes on with one blob on the gague - oh $hit!

I alway try to use VPlus and know most of the Shell stations in and around Bristol and was making a b line to the nearest one when the single blob disappeared - panic stations! Anyway not wishing to get stranded and more importantly get crap in the fuel filter I drove into the first petrol station I saw (Texaco as it happens) and put a £5 worth in to get me out of trouble.

What are other people's experiences - how long do you have when the gague goes blank?

About 5 litres, so 30 miles is a pretty good estimate.

I agree, you don't need to worry so much.

It does drop suddenly when you least want it to. I try to fill to max once it dips below half.

If anyone can shed some light here, what "crap" actually gets in the fuel filter.

I have changed loads of fuel filters on previous cars / friends and family cars and never have I actually seen one which is "dirty / blocked".

Every tank I've owned and looked into has been spotless, it can happen but it's pretty unlikely from my experience

Happened to me this weekend, zero bars and 10 miles to nearest petrol station! Drove with trepidation and slowly. Filled up with V Power, just squeezed in 43.5 litres, so well over a gallon left. Panic over.

A stated inside the filler flap, 95 to 98 RON the engine management will easily retard/advance the ignition accordingly, you get the full 'beans' obviously running on V-power or Tesco's Momentum99 the RAC review covers this....
