Default Fuel thread - What do you run and why?

I'm sure this has been done to death in the annals of S2KI but it just seems to have been the odd thread here and there rather than one definitive one like the tyre thread.

My S2000 has been on Shell Nitro+ for several years (long before I got it) and apart from one tank of BP Ultimate it's remained that way for the last year as where I lived in London there were Shell stations everywhere.

Since moving to Worcester there are less of them about so I started wondering about going with Momentum as an option.

I know there are those that say all supermarket fuel is crap, some that just put 95 in and others that will only ever suckle from Shells Ferrari flavoured teat.

I'm not concerned about MPG, though I do keep a track of it as a matter of course. Living in London a lot of the driving is at 12mph averages and roads littered with potholes and speedbumps. So nice to be out!

A little data from my records says my last 6 tanks of Nitro+ I got the following from a mix of driving in London and some jaunts to the Midlands and the coast.

Light on at 229 miles,
250 miles at fillup,
45 litres per fill,
25.3 mpg,
278 miles potential range

Would the cars petrol history make any difference to you in a sale? Do you think all supermarket fuel is gunk? Do you just put in whatever is on your route?

It just so happens that my nearest filling station is Shell, although I have been known to venture into Tesco when I'm sure that my inoculations are up to date and their filling station isn't overwhelmed by the Great Unwashed in their shabby Citroen Picassos and Vauxhall Zafiras or hideous 4x4's full of snotty brats.

Tesco is for keeping the riffraff out of Waitrose.

I mainly use shell but really do not notice the difference between it and any other super unleaded

Shell and only Shell - car is mapped on it, the wife's gets whatever is close and open, my works car runs on bio diesel, but have always used only Shell nitro/v power in my 'toy's over the years.

Do you think all supermarket fuel is gunk? Gunk mixed with water and pumps that are calibrated to the maximum allowance so your not actually getting the amount displayed on the meter.

Do you just put in whatever is on your route? Not in the S2000, that only gets Shell

To put this to bed, I've been on dynos and actually tested BP ultimate vs shell vpower etc on my own car however boosted and other customers cars.

The car will happily run on 97 ron fuel, even 95 however you will notice a bigger difference between 95 vs 97, not so much 97 vs 99.

97 vs 99 it will be down in power ever so slightly and mpg.

Usually what differentiates these fuels is additives, supermarket fuels are not as bad as people make them out to be and comes from the same refinery in almost all cases. People fail to remember when shell were fined, similar issue to supermarkets when they were destroying CAT's etc.

Boosting is a totally different matter.

Personally i wont run anything other than shell vpower or tesco momentum.

Lastly the only additives that boost octane in my experience is millers CVL no others, however doesnt turn a 97 into a true 99. And i think BP ultimate is over priced rubbish its barely 97 ron - i refuse to use it.

Cheers

The pumps are calibrated to dispense -0.5% to + 1%. Do you really think that -0.5% is significant and wouldn't all petrol stations go for the lower limit if it was achievable?

The base fuel comes from the same refineries. The only difference is the additives.

Tesco Momentum all the way - car seems happier with that than 97 (supercharged).

I mainly use vpower, but if I need a fill up and I'm passing a tesco, I'll get the momentum for the few pennies saving. Does it make a difference? Only done it once and I had just put on my exhaust so I have no idea. I used mainly momentum in my mini cooper s I had for a few months before my S, and it did make the exhaust pop and crackle a lot more than vpower, which is why I used it lol.
