Gutted!
One of my best mates lives in Canada and has been visiting for xmas. He goes back today. Had a bit of a send off for him on Thursday. Means I had to go back to Barnsley in the evening and then come back over to Chester after the pubs shut.
My record for doing Barnsley to Chester was set ages and ages ago when I had an E-reg 1.0l VW Polo. Mainly because of the time of driving and conditions (I've never done the run late in the evening and in dry weather since owning the S).
Reckoned I was going to take my 1hr15min record in the polo by a long way on the way home. Sure enough I get over the woodhead from where the road goes to national speed-limit at Penistone to the 40 speed-limit at Tintwhistle in just under 15mins. If I'd kept that pace up I reckon I'd have had the car home in about 55mins.....................right up until I came across a massive que of traffic on the M56 because of a jack-knifed lorry. 25 minute hold up.
The Polo still holds the record

Had to read this thread when I saw the title, glad it was a traffic jam which was to blame !!!
Then I had to reply to this thread....... because you mention Penistone which is where I grew up and was there over Christmas seeing the folks (I live in Southampton now). Most people have't heard of the place so it was interesting to see it on here.
(Sorry, not very interesting point that, but couldn't resist)
All the best

I have yet to beat 178 miles in exactly 2 hours, set years before speed cameras.
A Boxing day 7am departure from the southern outskirts of Wolverhampton.
M5/M40/A34/M27/A27 Chichester by-pass by 9am. Just under 90mph average and in a 1.8 Vuaxhall Carlton !!!!! Have difficulty believing it then and now.
It frightens me to death when I think about it, wife on board and risking both our skins, as 115mph/120mph was maintained for very long stretches, and with tyres probably not rated for such speeds. Stupid or what?

My best (or worst as the case may be) left York at 11.30 PM got to Charing in Kent at 0200 and promptly ran out of fuel..........a journey that I did regularly at "normal" speeds to Folkestone on a full tank. Got to work later that morning after walking to fuel stations and getting lifts at 0730 !

It's only this "Speed Thrills, Crack Kills" or whatever mantra that's corrupting your conscience. The Carlton was a good, honest German car.
I did Hertford to Hull in the X-1/9 in 2hr 15 once. I actually don't know how, since that was the car's realistic terminal velocity.
Never got anywhere close in the S2000.
I have matched it in in the Prelude.
Interested that the venerable Nick Graves owned an X 1 9 as they were considered by many at the time to be hairdresser's cars but I know them to be good handling machines that provided endless sport for me in my Lancia Beta Spider on the school run!
