Default handling question

Hi I've just bought a '00 black/black with 34K and have driven it a rather feeble 350miles or so. I'm slowly getting up to speed with (1) the car and (2) this site. The newbie FAQ is fantastic BTW.

My first question ( no doubt of many ) is a difficult one as it relates to the car's handling. My car has what I think is slightly odd behaviour but is perhaps a quirk of the S2000 - if you go into a corner at a reasonable speed (reasonable, not excessive) there almost seems to be a delay after turning the wheel before the car turns hard into the corner. Anybody else noticed anything like this? I'm not talking about sliding the rear or anthing like that, this is at more moderate speeds. It is a bit offputting to say the least...

Otherwise I'm very pleased with the car!

Cheers,

Jerry

B*llocks my first post and I go and put it in the 'for sale' section by mistake. If somebody would be kind enough to move it for me....

Cheers

Jerry, one of the mods will be along soon to move it

This is a very "pointy" car and the steering is very quick IMO especially on the MY99-MY01. Have you checked your tyre pressures when cold - should be 32psi on S02JZs, and more importantly have you got the right tyres on? Check the tech faq for details on tyres.

Welcome to the board, Jerry

I've moved your thread to the main UK board.

point & shoot.

What are you doing with your right foot when your tunring in? At what kind of speeds etc?

Maybe get the alignment laser checked - see the FAQ for the 02 Honda Optimum settings - I has these done and the car felt a lot sharper. Check the tyres and pressure as neil says

and welcome too

First thing to check is the tyres - if you don't have the right sort of Bridgestone SO-2's on your car (there are lots of threads about this on the board) then you must have 245mm wide tyres on the back.

When I bought my car it had S-03's all round and 225 S-03's on the back. This made it extremely "pointy" and I even lost the back end following a Ford Fiesta round a dry roundabout!

I then fitted 245 S-03's on the back (I won't be buying S-02's until I have worn out the fronts as I think you should keep the same tyre type on all corners) and the difference was amazing. The car feels really "dialled in" now. Also, the S-03's don't seem too bad in the wet (you know when they are about to let go and they don't seem to aquaplane on a flooded M25).

A cross brace also sharpens up turn in (more confidence inducing too) but the trait you describe does seem to be tyre-related.

As has been said, tyres come to mind as the likely problem (unless you are used to a car with very sharp steering - the S gets criticised for its steering when compared to some of its competitors, but I haven't driven other sportscars enough to comment).

Make sure your pressures are right and also your wear is even across the width of the tyre - they wear on the inside at the front quite badly and this is not immediately obvious unless you have a good look with full lock on.

If you're using the throttle as you go round the corner, then you're feeling the LSD (Limited Slip Differential) working, in effect, what you'll feel is the car slightly 'twist' as you apply power, since the outside wheel (the one describing the largest arc) will be sent more of the available torque as it has better grip. So the car feels almost like it is tighteing it's line into the corner, which i think is probably what you're feeling.
