Head Unit Recommendations
Hey eveyone,
I am looking at getting a new head unit for my car and have trawled the forum for quite a while now looking for something that not only has an iPod connector but will also fit nicely behind the door that the factory unit fits behind.
I have read that a few people have one of the Alpine HU's but I wasn't at all impressed with its ease of use or number of options or settings it has in comparrison to others when my friend had one in his car.
I would ideally like a Pioneer or JVC EXAD HU so if anyone has one fitted and the door still closes on the fascia panel then please let me know which model you have so I can look into them some more.
I have a budget of about

I have this in the S

Its a really good bit of kit, Bluetooth, USB (I have a 16GB one full of music) and feels of decent quality (although not as good as the Becker I owned before - which you can't use the steering controls with - hence i got rid). Only one slight draawback - the joystick is a bit of a cock to use at times.
And yes the door will close!

Will the security pannel still close with a JVC?

I have a DV4202, i like it as i can play all my mp3's/wma's from a DVD.
You can just remove the fascia anyways.
i had JVC AVX1 - security door did not close. i have a sneeky supicion that the newer AVX's have thinner faces, so the door will close (AVX11 etc)
however, im not positive and i'd want more definitive info if i was parting with my cash.
i have the pioneer P7900UB. i had no need for ipod, and opted for usb connectivity for USB ext HDD/pen drive use.
sec door closes perfectly with this unit.
there are 2 (minor) flaws with this model in particular....
- lack of amps for USB connection. it claims 500mA which is plenty for SSD/Pen drive technology. if your trying to run a regular hard-drive then it's very hit and miss as to which drives will stay powered on. also, some regular hdd's dont like the cold in winter. i've lucky found an old 40gb 5200rpm Fujitsu laptop hard drive which works perfect all year around.
- this is more of preference: when you go into the menu and search your mp3's, you select your track and play it, exit the menu. when you then try to re-enter the menu to play another mp3 track, it will not remember the last folder location. you have to go back through your folder structure.
there is another nice feature which not all players have:
- if you turn ignition off and leave the car, when you return, the unit will remember where you were in a track and continue playing. some units do not do this, and will restart the track from fresh again.
minor things, but do make the difference between 'good' and 'awesome'.
either way, i love my 7900ub and wouldn't think twice about another pioneer unit.
the 7900ub is one of the older models of it's generation, so im not sure if the newer models have fixed the menu 'issue' and/or the limited USB max current - maybe mattg4321 can confirm?
mine has the rear usb fly-lead. comes out down into the passenger footwell and i store hdd in the cargo net. i wouldnt want a front-mounted port since i'd forever be unplugging cables to close the security door.
