I got so fed up setting off the headlamp washer button with my elbow everytime I changed gear that I decided to do something about it. The logical thing would be to transfer the switch to the dashboard blank which mirrors the Rear Foglamp switch but my dealer said this would cost an Arm and a Legend. I therefore decided to fit a tray cover over the existing switch.
I used a transparent plastic lid from a modelmakers burr drill set but there must be many other suitable lids around - try your significant other's makeup bag. I tried to fit it with a hinge (dolls house door hinge) tucked into the back of the cupholder/ashtray recess but because of the camber on the console this wouldn't work. I had to cut the bottom edges of the tray to the camber profile and eventually I used a narrow strip of black Velcro to fix the leading edge of the tray to the console. This works well, the thing stays in position despite arm movements - see photo
When people enquire what it is, I tell them it's the protective cover for the seat ejector button.
The 2002 model has the switch on the dash, mirroring the fog lamp switch, just as you wanted. I don't see why you dealer couldn't have got you one of those. I suppose the wiring might be a PITA but I wouldn't have thought it would be that expensive. Perhaps the dealer just didn't want the hassle
