Don't buy second hand - not worth the risk. How much do you value your head? If you're trying to save money, this isn't the corner you want to cut.

Go to a bike shop and try them on, I know they don't have to be as comfortable in a car as on a bike, but different brands make different shapes for different heads.

I found Arai the most comfortable. Mine is so comfortable in fact I have once or twice forgotten I'm even wearing it!
This. Bike shop and find one that fits, and one that probably won't ruin your hair!

I've got a Takachi TK-30 which was £50. It's been fine so far

In the end, how much you spend depends on what you want it for.

Thats the helmet ive got, my head measures 61cm and the XL(63cm) is a very snug fit. They tend to loosen up abit after youve worn them a while.

Simpson Diamondback

Marushin RS-2 is one of the lightest at 1050g. A nice hat and I almost bought one.

Yep. Everyone has the right to look like a twat if they want to.

For safety as well as comfort, it's important that you get one that fits properly. So I'd go and try one on somewhere, and bike shops are the obvious place. The difference between a bike helmet and a car helmet is not going to make the difference if you have an accident serious enough to bang your head.

Modern bike helmets don't conform to the right standards to be eligible for use in MSA events, so bear this in mind if you think you think you'll ever want to sprint or race. Bike helmets are fine for track days though.

As others have said the most important thing is fit - different brands fit different people. Go to a bike superstore and try a few on. If you want a proper car helmet GPR at Silverstone has stock you can try on.

Thanks for all the posts guys, much appreciated. The helmet will be for recreational track days, probably a couple of times a year for the time being so I will take a look at the more affordable options for the time being and then upgrade if I get into them more regularly.

Bumping this as I have a question on the V2 helmet as recommended here. I ordered one last week but it didn't arrive on time for Combe, so I ended up sniffing someone elses sweat for the day. Yay.

V2 helmet arrived today, it's a snug fit, I can feel the cushioning pressing slightly on my fat cheeks. I imagine that there'll be a 'bedding in' period where after a while this will go?

Secondly, anyone know if the Go Pro side mount works with it? If not I'll probably return it and get something else.

Thanks.
