If it gets past about 98, you need to start taking defensive action.
Thanks Ian.

Since the bleed I've made a couple of 20 mile each way trips and temps have been solid 87-89 whilst moving, seeing 91 whilst stationary. Coolant level hasn't changed in the bottle so things are stable enough whilst keeping rpm below 3k generally and 4.5k on the motorway.

I know the tests say it isn't head gasket but my gut feeling is it may be a minor leak.
Air is getting in. Coolant system is above ambient pressure. Therefore whatever is getting air in has to be above ambient. That essentially boils down to combustion gasses.
I'll keep mulling it over though since the tests are throwing doubt on that conclusion.
This back up what another engineer has told me. I'm making investigations into a gasket change - will the head need a light skim as well?
Probably. It is one of those jobs that you wouldn't know if it needed it until you'd finished putting everything together. Therefore you might as well whilst you're at it

Update.

My local independent chap had the car overnight and checked it from stone cold this morning. He observed some white smoke from the exhaust (only a little) and has found some combustion gases doing the usual test.

So, head gasket (or crack) it is!

Annoyingly, having spent 2 hours of my time driving down to TGM and back, and being without my car for a week, they failed to diagnose this.

Funny how bad news can be considered better than no news at all...
