Default HiFi changes

Fellow S2K'ers, I'm toying with the idea of changing the speakers, upgrading the hifi, adding a smaller/subtle sub and adding some extra speakers in the roll bars. What have you guys done and what do you recommend? Does a new head unit affect the dash controls? Ideas/pitfalls are all welcome.

Do a search on the board. Actually, the search sucks and won't let you view anything other than the 1st page!

Since I'm getting paid for looking at 25 boring uneventful computer screens (which will hopefully remain that way for the rest of the night), i'll offer my views

1st Question is:

Do you have an iPod and is it essentially your music collection?

If yes, then you'll be wanting one of these:

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/advice/show/id/12.html

They are basically DIN sized iPod interfaces for you car.

Bear in mind, they have no CD mechanism, so it's iPod/USB stuff only which is either great, or crap depending on your situation

If, like me, you despise Apple, all of it's image concious crap, Think that Steve Wozniak got sh1t on, and you don't like Steve 'The Knob' Jobs, then you'll be after something else

I had a good look around and decided on what I wanted based on these factors:

Good quality Brand

Try the Electronics forum, there's lots of useful stuff there.

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showforum=26

Head unit: Most people use Alpine a historically they were the only manufacturer to provide a dash control adapter KCE-865B. They also make excellent head units which is another reason to use them, although Pioneer also come highly recommended. Another preferred dash conrtroller is from Modifry http://www.modifry.com/products/dci/index.htm which widens your choice of head unit manufacturers.

For good sound, you will want an amplifier and besides how much power you want, location is the next most important factor. Preferred locations are behind/under the passenger seat, on top of the fuel tank, inside the spare tyre, in place of the spare tyre, on the back of the boot, or in the footwell.
Here's a link to how to make a spare tyre or boot rack, as well as some other useful links: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=262783
Here's my fuel tank mount:

The new Alpine PDX amps are very compact and you can easily fit say, a PDX4.150 to bi amp the front components or a PDX2.150 for simpler installation. the 4 version could be used for the headrest speakers if you are set on having them. A PDX1.600 or 1.1000 will work well for the subwoofer. http://www.alpine-electronics.co.uk/index....d=pdxamplifiers Genesis amps are also used quite widely here.

I now have 2 amps in there since I added a sub, talking of which, the most popular choice is a Darkside sub enclosure from http://www.darksidesubs.com/ William, who runs the company, is an S2000 owner and is very helpful indeed. He does 3 versions depending on how big a sub you want. Ask him for advice on sub and amp. Lots of UK people have these so you can rely on him.

The most important speakers are the front components (I am not a fan of headrest speakers as they destroy any image you are trying to get). I have the Alpine Type-R components which are very good, and other widely used speakers include Focals, Boston Acoustics and Infinity, as well as the usual suspects.

Again, much depends on your budget of course but feel free to ask any other questions

Considering Head units, has anyone looked at the Parrot RK8200. Its about to be launched. Great if you have an iPod. ALso with built in SD card reader and Bluetooth connectivity. The removable front looked quite bulky though, not sure if the cover will close!
