I would still give it a go and speak to the police if you can get some photographic evidence of the car that hit yours. I once got rear-ended at a traffic light and the w***ker denied causing a hairline crack on my bumper and did not even leave his insurance details when I asked for it and just drove off at high speed. Went to the police station and reported this - no witness as they all drove off when we parked in a side road. Got a call from the police a few days later and was told they charged this man for careless driving and failing to provide insurance details. Hopefully he had his insurance premium increased - although a holes like him likely will not tell the truth come insurance renewal time.

It's still a police matter despite no injury. It's exactly as the OP titled it - A hit and run.
The proof comes from seeing both cars and comparing the damage. Both cars work at the same place so it puts the two together quite easily if the car is found.

I knew someone who had a visit from the police for this exact reason.

Keep us posted as I like a good bit of detective work, especially if you come up trumps

We've got a mess dinner this evening with the person in question in attendance...I might just say that they've identified who did it to see if I can bluff him.

I haven't got his home address yet, but may well follow him home one day and/or ring round the LR dealers in the area to see if they've had any requests for RR rear lights.

Yes bluff them and go on to say, it's a police matter now, if only they'd come forward.

Might scare him into admission

Matt, sorry to hear about your H&R. Years ago something similar happened to me. I got back to my 2 week old car (was brand new) with a wing smacked in. It really put the dampers on the enthusiasm for my new car and motoring in general for quite some time. It was probably a good thing that I couldn't identify the culprit though.
