Default How long should a soft top last

Had the car from new, now 5.5 years old and yesterday noticed a 2" split in the roof fabric.

The car has been kept out in the open and had the hard top on for 4 out of 5 winters.

Does 5 and a half years seem a reasonable lifetime for a roof????

What do you think guys?

cheers E

Things like small tears are highly dependent on positioning and sharpness of metal corners, and will therefore change the age at which it wears out quite a lot. Mine was never hard topped and lasted 8 years, but I fitted extra patches in the wear spots and kept it well treated etc. Personally, I think anything over 5 yrs is reasonable.

Mine was replaced after 7 1/2 years, holes appearing at around 7 years.

I replaced mine after 6 years and its probably due another one over this winter (5.5 years) so sounds like you are in the right ballpark, although I've never had a hardtop and its kept outside all time (under a cover in the winter).

Mine is nearly 11yrs old and has no signs of wear at all.

It all really depends on how it's been looked after.

If mine had a glass screen it'd be fine after 15 years. Just a small tear in one corner.

The big hole in the plastic and the gaffer tape lets it down though.
