Maybe it's half an hours labour + Vat + sundries.
A lot of garages charge £50-£60+ for labour, then add vat on top of that.

And I've heard of more adding on the cost of sundries these days that used to absorbed by the garage.

Like grease, sealant, sandpaper sort of stuff.

Doesn't sound that bad to me. Especially since you didn't get a quote and they are clearly turning a blind eye to their MOT accreditation.

I'll ask TGM how long it would take them to do the work, i've already asked other garages, but because they haven't done it before, they're only giving rough estimates, - but those estimates are topping at 1.5 hrs.

If TGM say an hour all in, and £37.50+vat is for for an hour, I'll refuse to pay.

If £37.50 is for half an hour, i'll just have to take it on the chin, never use the garage again, dissuade anyone else thinking of using them in the future.

Then buy myself some ramps & tools!

They dont do the MOT themselves, - they give it to another garage.

Come to think of it, - who's to say they changed the CAT at all - if they're that friendly with the MOT garage!

Total cost of 37.50x2 = £75.

Maybe they decided that the cost of changing the cat, delivering the car to the other garage, recovering the car from the garage and then changing the cat back was worth £75.

Maybe they factored in the time it took for the mechanic(s) to deliver the car to the other garage and then collect it.
Even it the MOT garage it just a few minutes away then it’s taking them time to do it.

Say they charge £50 and hour, that’s £50 for the cat changing plus half an hour for delivering and collecting the car – all rolled into one easy cost.

If the car is on a lift/ramp, it should take no longer than 20 minutes to remove the decat and fit the cat...seriously. It actually took me ~ 1/4 hour last time.

My car is bog standard, and I certainly would not be able to drive it onto portable ramps!

You need to get wide ramps too, my mate had some when i fitted a brace.

At one point I was literally 1mm away from smashing the the front lip off when i misjudged the clutch lol.
