I have an M-reg Fiesta diesel (which I actually got for free !!!)

If you're going for an older car I'd seriously recommend a diesel - it seems the engines last much longer and they'll give you better fuel economy (though they take a bit more oil).
Ideal qualities for a second car.

There's an H reg Nissan Bluebird on my dad's drive that I can have as a commuting car when I get my next S. Only 77k miles, a complete shed but put a decent sound system in it and who cares when it's just going to be sat in traffic Mon - Fri.

as long as the car runs I am not too bothered what it is - a diesel could be the way to go

I'd go for a ford fiesta, You'll be able to get a m reg or newer. Ok handling(chuckable), Cheap insurance, every mechanic in the world knows how to fix them. Cheap and easily available parts, Good on juice, and loads to choose from.

Zero

I'd recommend having a good think about what would be most useful to you.

I bought a Scorpio estate as a daily driver. It's big enough to carry just about anything, comfortable and doesn't attract any attention. If you are interested, get an Ultima - fully loaded. But mail me if you do coz there are things to look out for. Cheaper and easy to get parts - Carlton estate. Omegas are expensive and well known for problems.

There are real bargains and real nightmares at Blackbushe Auctions (BCA site). You really need to go two or three times in a row to see what is being re-entered after discovering a duff purchase. It happens - I've done it myself.

If you are going to have a second car, doesn't it make sense to make it a useful one? Trips to the tip will be a pleasure!

With the S for fun, it really is the best of both worlds.
