Insurance Comparison Thread 2014 - Compare Quotes

Hi,

As you can guess from the title of the thread, im having some trouble getting quoted a fair renewal price.

I'm currently with admiral, who want 1,710. Ive been looking around and most insurance companies wont insure because of my age. ( 22 )

But seems to me every compare site i go on, '1st central insurance' comes up the cheapest, anyone dealt or with them ?

Wouldn't mind hearing from the younger members what companies you are with.

List of No Go all ready :-

Church hill, John lewis, Direct line, Quinn, Aviva, Co-op, M&S, adrin flux & club car insurance plus few more, all no go due my age. Also

I also would like to add, i have clean license, 5 years driving, 2 years no claims etc etc.

Any helpers ?

mikefifth 01-03-2014 07:14 AM

1,710!!!!

I am 21 and with 5 points on my license and I paid a tickle over £1100 last march! Suppose I do live out in the sticks though.

I am with Admiral, soon to have a joint policy with my other half. I have an agreed payment of £650 from march 28th which covers me until October 28 and they are giving me 2 years no claims for doing this. It means my policy is in line with hers then.

I would spam the comparison sites if I was you. I always find confused.com to be cheaper than comparethemeerkats.

Try Adrian Flux?

Sorry I cant help too much.

Mike

Agr07 01-03-2014 07:20 AM

No problem, thanks for the info.

I will try a multi car with the mother, And i tried adrian flux, they can not insure me because I'm under 25. :(

Looked on confused.com, 1st central again cheapest at 1200.

As for where i live, I'm a LU postcode but closer Milton keynes then luton :(

mikefifth 01-03-2014 07:23 AM

Sorry I just realized you said adrian flux is a no go. ignore my comment

Thats OK

I get very hesitate around companies I know little about, the cheapest quote for me was a company called "good girl".....yeah I didn't go with them with a name like that.

Insurance can be flogged to death and revived so many times. There are so many factors considered that it is impossible to get the same quote as someone else.

Keep looking, I hope they don't fleece you out of too much money mate.

RattyS2k 01-03-2014 07:38 AM

Try Sky insurance. There are a few under 25s on here as well so try doing a search and look through recent posts.

Agr07 01-03-2014 07:38 AM

I've seen good girl pop up with me for a quote, i dismissed them as well do not worry.

On the plus side I have got the money sitting there to pay for it, but I'm not going to pay over the top. ( If you get what i mean )

Tried them today, could not get through to speak to anyone, but have requested a call back ( waiting still )

mikefifth 01-03-2014 07:41 AM

Just out of interest I have noticed that payment in one sum is considerably cheaper than monthly installments. :)

ch33zyf33t 01-03-2014 08:05 AM

Hi,

Might be better waiting for the call back or even trying them again.

My renewal from adrian flux was 1100quid and decided to go with Sky after a bit of shopping around. got it for 600quid in the end.

just to ad I'm 29 tho. on European licence.

Good luck with the search.

scottyos2k 01-03-2014 08:07 AM

My insurance needs to renew in middle of Jan. I usually pay a full year upfront to lower the cost, I do have a past accident which doesn't help, I think I'm gunna be paying around 2k+ ; <
I'm 25 in June though so next time will be cheaper hopefully

flybikeslee 01-03-2014 08:09 AM

I was insured with flux at 23 and 24

Just paid my Admiral quote. Would have been 1700, but adding my bro (25, doctor) brought it down to 1200 (lol!).

22, male, Bristol suburbia.

Natswoo 01-03-2014 09:38 AM

Try sky, I've just insured with them for £550, 300 less than my renewal quote from Admiral, 26 / Bath

ROB1980 01-03-2014 11:00 AM

One advantage of getting old I suppose, just insured mine fully comp for £286 :tipwink:

Scrimmy 01-03-2014 11:37 AM

Try Brentacre

RobinA3 01-03-2014 12:39 PM

I am with 1st central and have been for a few years - never had to deal with an insurance claim so can't comment on customer service etc.

Carl2k7 01-03-2014 03:30 PM

Try elephant, I'm 22 in a rough postcode and got it for £680

I only do 4k miles a year and have my parents as named drivers

Got you well beaten £216.12 with AXA. :vintage:

But some companies just don't try do they ................

jamiepm 01-04-2014 12:37 AM

I'm 23 and Adrian flux cover me, well redstar through them
Costs me 850 a year, no points and 4 years no claims though
All mods declared as well

rhauri 01-04-2014 01:11 AM

Here's how I got cheaper insurance on my RX8 when I was 22.

Put a female friends name on the policy (as a named driver, so I was still the primary driver - therefore no swindles!) who was 6 years older than me and with shed loads on NCB / no incidents.

Give that a go with your mum if you haven't tried that already.

Also, try the specialists like Greenlight, Sky Insurance and my favourite, Livingstone Warman. You'll need to call them up and do quotes over the phone as not in comparison sites.

Good luck mate.

Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4

J_B 01-04-2014 01:28 AM

rhuari mentioned them, but +1 for Greenlight.

Steviebe 01-04-2014 01:29 AM

It's always cheaper if you have female on the policy as well. It's odd. Maybe she is supposed to have a calming influence on your driving...

My partner is on our joint dual car policy but I'll never let her drive it!

Agr07 01-04-2014 02:06 AM

Hi,

Thanks for positive comments, and other companies i should try.

I did get a quote from adrian flux in the end at 3k so still a no go on them :)

I'm filling out a Greenlight insurance now as we speak. (Y)

As for adding female on the insurance on my admiral policy i already have mum and the miss's added. ( which do not touch at all )

I have also managed to work my through 1st central site and got quote off 1.45 fully comp and all the added extra's. Basic cover starts at 1.289.88

I still have to 14th of this month to find something, so hopefully i can still get it down further.

I'm also with AXA, 33, 9 year NCB but 2 none fault claims I have to declare, could have insured it for around £250 with a higher excess but at £286 the excess is £200 rather than £500

E4RTH WORM JIM 01-04-2014 02:37 AM

I've been with Sky insurance for the last 8 years (well barring one year when I changed to Adrian Flux, but then moved straight back because they con'd/lied to me).

I first got insured with them as soon as I turned 21. I'm now 29. My first preimium was about £2200 it's now £700 with £xxxxx spent of mods and supercharged.

I haven't found a broker better than them for service. I must say though I haven't claimed with them (other than for windscreen damage) which is the real test for any broker and underwriter!

AlexGJ248 01-04-2014 05:59 AM

I'm 21, 4 years NCB and 3 years held my licence for, (4 years this year). I'm with Adrian Flux and its £1200 for me. I would recommend putting as many females on your policy as possible, even if they won't drive it. It should drop it quite a bit!

henryp 01-05-2014 04:54 AM

I'm 23, 4 years NCB, 1 non fault accident, and paid in the region of £600 with Adrian Flux BUT I'm on a limited mileage policy.

WRCGooseS2K 01-05-2014 06:53 AM

Unfortunately your age is REALLY going to go against you, 25 is the golden number!

I was with a company called M R Lonsdale & Partners based in Durham for a bit with my other car. They are an independent broker and they were good.

I'm currently with Sky, was 26 at the time of taking out the policy, mods declared, 6 yrs NCB, £572. I paid in fully too, if you do it this way they are far more likely to bring it down as they are getting one lump some.

I'm surprised any young 'uns can get insurance at all seeing as they are group 47 insurance!

So a +1 for sky and yeah try Greenlight.

PTR300 01-05-2014 12:52 PM

Just picked up a £219 one from "Quote me happy" and I was,.... until I saw the excess.....£1150 !!!!

I always stick a voluntary excess on of around £500....BUT the compulsory excess of quite a number of companies I have just checked is around £700....PLUS my £500.. :banghead:

Dropping the voluntary excess to £300 helps but still gives me around £250 as a premium.....

It would appear taking a big excess will help the premium cost but at what cost if you have an accident............

A call to Sky and Prestige tomorrow I think.

will look into this :tipwink: i do have 3 cars so this will save ££££££££sss I do have ncb protection as well btw

dai_Bill 01-05-2014 01:57 PM

I'm 25, with 1 years ncb, i do around 10k a year. been driving for 4 years now and I'm paying 1500 with adrian flux. I must admit though, my postcode is good, I live in the countryside lol.

Carper 01-05-2014 02:12 PM

About 1k for me 21 with 2 years no claims from flux direct

laurence___ 01-05-2014 11:56 PM

I'm 22, 4 years driving, 2 years NCB and mine was 1100 for the year with Admiral! Put both my parents on as named drivers (they've got decent records)

Seems postcode plays a big part too mind you!

J1mmys 01-06-2014 02:08 AM

A couple year older and you get it so much cheaper lads, im 29 and i pay £480 with Aviva. As other says getting old does have advantages ha.

emc 01-07-2014 04:18 PM

I had a nightmare to trying to get a quote for an S2K today. I plan on getting an S2K in February when my insurance is up for renewal in my current car.

Currently driving a Renaultsport Clio 172 Cup, which costs me £850 through Sky in a relatively good area of Bedford (if there are even good areas round here) as a 26 year old with 8 years no claims bonus. All mods declared and I have a no fault claim when someone went into the back of new 2 years ago

SkyInsurance wouldn't even give me a quote! Said I didn't have enough experience with performance cars! Doesn't matter that my Clio is a little bit tints tuned and probably faster than a standard S2K anyway apparently.

Called Adrian Flux straight up and they offered me £545 for an S2000 and £675 for the Clio. Since when is a Clio more expensive to insure than an S2k?? Especially when I can't even get a quote because of my lack of apparent experience and where am I meant to get that experience if I can't even get insurance?
The Clio is insurance group 31 as standard also as opposed to the Honda in 40 to baffle me even more.

I have no idea how they get these costs, swear there's someone in the back with a magic eight ball and a couple of dice.

I use 1st Central Insurance too - they were good for me, about £700 with 6 points, 1 claim against someone else in the past, 10 years protected no claims bonus, 27 years old

jamiepm 01-14-2014 04:01 AM

I know you've already got a quote with them but Adrian flux are usually best for me
23, 4 years no claims nill points and all modifications declared for £750 or so
I only have 3k mileage on the s though, although for a grand it's 950
I'm actually with a company called red star I think, so I would definitely try again

GreenmanS2000 01-14-2014 11:30 AM

I love reading these threads. It reminds me of my "yoof" when my dad was horrified at the insurance i was paying (Triumph Spitfire, XR2, Pug 205 GTi etc) but I thought nothing of it. Looking back I can only rue the money I wasted -I'd rather have saved it and got on the property ladder sooner.

I'm not knocking the youngsters -merely being an old fart...

I thought the European Gender Directive that became EU law in Jan 2013 meant that it was illegal to discriminate between genders. In practice, this meant most male premiums went up to compensate and fill the previous gender gap. Now in 2014, the gender really shouldn't matter.

But other contributing factors are; Homeowner (25% discount with one insurer I know), where the car is kept, (garaging is worse than driveway), and being married always helps. Sadly, most of these things happen later in life too.

If you genuinely drive safely, hike up the excess to get the discounts. My recent crash cost nearly £2k in repairs, most of which was for new lights, so £500 XS is nothing really.

Maybe they're stereotyping you - the kind of person who drives a tinted Clio might not be able to handle an S2000 without crashing ;)

I'm sure there's probably a stat to prove it somewhere!

Dont worry about that, I've got money from savings / dead family members which have all been saved up & only few K, short from joining the ladder.

The issue we have there is lack of RWD drive experience..

It definitely pays to shop around - I just reduced my Admiral 3 car multi- car renewal from £620 to £458 :) by getting online quotes from their own site.

I'm very impressed and as soon as it's ready I'll be calling you guys up!
Who knows you may even drop the price a little more as I'll be 25 when it's finished not 24 ;)

That's still really good, I am going to have to get on top of this only got a few days left on the current insurance !!

WinFreak 01-18-2014 01:31 AM

Try bridle insurance too, they beat flux by miles for me

Sky wouldn't even insure me

Scrimmy 01-18-2014 04:47 AM

The £250 is just compulsory. Nothing else.

nomadicS2k 01-27-2014 04:34 AM

Are JDM models more expensive to insure? Any recommendation would be great!

Dano2k 02-12-2014 10:48 AM

After loads of searching - AxA (and swiftcover) are very cheap at the moment!
£290 fully comp - age 26, 7NCB, £250 excess, cover for other cars, named driver and 90 days abroad (perfect for Euromeet!).
Beat Sky Insurance by approx £300 and Prestige by £150.

£1,105 for 10 months insurance which gives me 1 year NCB after. That was a discounted as I paid upfront other wise I was looking at roughly £230 p/m.

Pricey car at my age !

Indeed it is, i'm 21 with 5 points but still paid less that you! :D

Makes you wonder how they calculate it.

Classicline - 2000 Reg, Val £5k, 3k limited miles, garaged in North Scotland, drivers = me (45yo, max NCD, no points) + 1 (father, 67yo, max NCD no points).

Renewed for £230 fully comp (£100 excess.)

(SORN 6 months per year so 3k miles limit not been an issue so far).

Not many companies doing the S2k as a 'classic' but Classicline have covered me for past 2 years and reduced price each year.

£1,105 for 10 months insurance which gives me 1 year NCB after. That was a discounted as I paid upfront other wise I was looking at roughly £230 p/m.

Beat Sky Insurance by approx £300 and Prestige by £150.

yes very - the best quote of the majors by far - £340 for me in Bolton (43,12y NCB,350xs but 1 big accident last year).

So given they will insure me in Greater Manchester - why will they refuse to quote me for Ulverston in the lake district where I'm moving next week?

Ended up with sky for 380 with 300xs all in - that accident last year is hurting!.

Welcome!

Lots of threads on here on insurance. So many factors to take in to consideration - what's good for one isn't necessarily good / the same for someone else.
