Default Insurance Question

I recently re-newed my car insurance. I have 3 speeding offences in the last 2 years and therefore my premium is more than I would like.

At the end of the month I will only have 2 speeding offences in the last 5 years.

I have got several quotes that will virtually half my annual premium.

Presumably there is no small print stopping me from cancelling my current policy in June and starting a new one?

Secondly...will be insurers reduce my premium if I phone up and tell them I now have only 2 offences in the last year? I can guess the answer!

Cheers

Nick

You can cancel your insurance at any time but check the small print that there isn't a cancellation charge.

It's worth ringing your current insurance company and telling them that you only now have xx amount of points and would they be prepared to revisit your premium - it's obviously worth having a couple of quotes to hand to give them and tell them you're quite prepared to move if they can't match it.

You may get stung for cancelling, some policies stipulate a minimum 6 months or similar

Ring and enquire how much of a refund you will get. You might well get an unpleasant shock.

Quite a few insurers will effectively 'fine' you three months worth of premium if you cancel straight after the cooling off peroid and then on a sliding scales after that.

We recently cancelled karen's freelander policy after 6 months. The premium for the full year was

Before I renewed I would have made a point with the insurer, but as many of 'em are becoming anal now about paperwork and what convictions are actually printed on your license at the time of renewal, as apposed to the dates of convictions and when they become null and void, you may have to wait a year to avoid being penalised again by changing your policy...

I've cancelled policies a couple of times and always got a pro-rata refund.

You'll probably lose a bit of NCB in the process.
