Default Insurance Settlement

Hello

Anybody got any suggestion on how to approach this. I wrote my S off last month on the way back from a meal to celebrate my girlfriends birthday!!!!. Managed to get into a spin when I hit standing water at about 70. Didn't hit anything else but did hit a sign...hard.

To cut a long story short the insurance company (Elephant) has confirmed it as a write off. Last week they sent me a cheque for

just keep sending them back your disgust at the level of money they are offering. Keep showing them what you can buy a similar car for to get what you need back.

To post the pics, upload them to your album - see MyS2K then select them using the long reply method (rather than Fast Reply box) or by editing your post and inserting them. The album you upload them to must be public

Just going through the same with their sister company, Admiral. They get their prices from a monthly thing called Glass (I'll look it up later). The dealers use the same listing. Keep pushing, in all though the value of the car will drop in the new year, for me, they are holding off for till then to give me a price.

sorry to read you had a bad smash..

at least don't cash the cheque..

I guess you can send them example cars for sale, but the only problem with quoting autotrader prices etc is that these are offer prices and not the final sale price...also since you have a JDM it must be much harder to estimate the value.

but how much do you think it is actually worth? since it can't be realistically that much more than the 11k already on the table??

yep, that's all you can do - provide evidence of what an identical car (or as close as you can get) would cost.

as kobe says though, advertised prices are ASKING prices

unfortunately for you,

The advice already provided is quite sound and you should be prepared to accept close to the sum already offered. The key things to consder here are:

1. Advertised prices are not SOLD prices
2. Glass's guide is the undisputed mechanism for determining the value of cars by UK dealers.

Having said that, the guide is just that. It allows a small margin for condition, mileage, etc.

Your best bet is to provide examples of exact copies of other cars of very similar (preferably the same) quality/spec and ask them to re-evaluate their offer.

You should also bear in mind that they haven't quoted you a 'final' offer, which also suggests that there is some room for manouvre.

Finally you might also want to point out any costs you might have had to incur such as taxis/hiring cars whilst you have been without your own vehicle.

Best of luck,

Finesse

I hate insurance companies.

Just keep sending them letter telling them you're not happy with the offer.

As others have said send advert copies to show used values.

As to the fact its an import, contact one of the Japanese car import companies (find 'em in the back of Japanese Performance) and ask them for a quote on a car identical to your S. That should help.
