The guys on Octane.ie seem to think that the new Vrt changes are now only going to apply to cars built after July 2008 and the old system will still apply to cars built prior to July 08 because the motor industry were afraid that the country would get swamped with 1 year old diesel cars. Does anyone know what's really going to happen?

There was something in the Sunday Business Post yesterday and it looks like the new tax & VRT rates will apply to all vehicles registered in the state on or after the 1st of july.I dont think it has anything to do with when they were built, only registered.

If thats the case then a 07 diesel car imported after July is going to be a savage amount cheaper to road tax and VRT than a second hand Irish car, whats going to happen with all the cars here?

I think it will actually be the other way around..
Anything registered or re-registered on or after the 1st of July will be subject to the new tax rates..
Hence an imported 07 diesel from wherever will be more expensive to tax than an equivalent Irish car..

It won't because if you take a BMW 520D it is going to drop by 7K in VRT under the new system and the road tax is going to be cheaper than the current 2ltr. tax. so anyone with a 07 one is going to lose there ass on the secondhand value.

Should help the value of our cars a little - can't see any S2000s being registered in Ireland after July!
