Location of airfields
There is a list of Airfields (both used and disused) at www.homepages.mcb.net/bones/06airfields/UK/ukmenu.htm.
This may be a good starting point for identifying your local possibilities

What a fantastic site
I didn't know that Hatfield was no longer used
Many years ago I worked for BAe there.
In those days, if you worked on the site, there was little to stop you getting onto the runway but it looks as though it might be fenced off now.
I was there in the days that the apprentices rebuilt a Mosquito and we used to sit out on the grass at lunchtime while the test pilots had a bit of fun.

A bit o/t but ... Hatfield ! Brings back a few memories. I acted as a consultant to the University of Herts who are building a new Uni campus there. Don't know if they have started yet. About the only air related use there now is a helicopter pad.
Arlington (a property company subsid of Rover) own the site and they are building all sorts there (warehouses, offices etc). Also, they built a mock village there for a war film, I think it was Saving Private Ryan but I may be wrong. Amazing eh !

Just a bit of history - my wife's father worked for De Havilland at Hatfield during the war and was later involved in the design/building of the Comet (the first commercial jet liner) which had a nasty habit of falling out of the sky - nothing to do with him, I think.
The family moved to Hatfield for the duration of the war and my wife was born in a stately home, Brocket Hall, which was requisitioned for use as a maternity hospital. The present Lord Brocket, you may recall, went to clink for a fraudulent insurance claim on his collection of vintage cars.
O/T, just the usual useless bits of information which lighten the day.

I used to drive around Tangmere in Sussex with friends many years ago. This had a complete perimeter plus runways and an original tower. The fire brigade used to use it for high speed driver training off the public roads (due to the massive run-offs!)
This was free and with no security - only known by a few who would tear around in mini coopers/ MG's. etc

If anyone is in that area you may want to take the junction off the A27 and see if it still exists - it used to be great.
