The car journos were quite looking forward to this when it was planned a while back - can't recall reading any UK reviews though, so if it has been tested, perhaps it doesn't live up to expectations.

What I found more interesting was the suggestion that this engine would fit in the new MX5 at some point in the future.........

looked at a new, but smaller engined version yesterday (2.2 I think)

I thought it was a nice car and pretty good value

well screwed together and some nice detail like the switchgear

I'll post something if we test drive it next week

That would make it an MPS version though, which Mazda have never sold in Europe.

FWD though, is it not? It's not as pretentious as the Lexus IS's but I still don't like them. A "nearly" car IMO, like the Renault 19 16V, and the MG ZS.

Mazda 6... one of the dullest cars on the road IMO.

MPS... Why?

Heh, some people have no sense of humour.

AWD eh? It'd be nice if something as anoynmous as a '6 came and slapped a few chavs in their Impreza's. I find most Impreza's won't come near me with a barge pole. Those that do are duly wiped. It's amazing how many people (both owners and non-owners) who think Impreza's are the fastest thing on the roads.

I came across a car full of them in a "classic" Impreza Turbo a few weeks back on a twisty bumpy b-road on a cold wet Sunday morning. He should have eaten me for breakfast with his "superior" 4WD. I overtoook him on one of the few straights at about 100mph whilst "pulling some air" over a crest.

The look on the drivers face as I went past was priceless. Had backed right off after that. "Look at that f*cking nutter wae his wooly hat on! I'm no racing that c*nt!"

The MPS uses the Ford/Mazda 2.3 Duratec and runs a Haldex type 4WD system. This type of system runs mainly in FWD mode until it detects slip and then shifts power to the rear. It works very similar to the current Quattro system with the exception in the new RS4
This is not as good as the permanent system employed by the likes of Subaru and Mitsubishi and Nissan however.
The Duratec engine is a very nice 4 pot and next to the F20 and K20 is probably the best four cylinder there is at the moment. It has a very good and efficient head design and is capable of excellent power and torque. Adding a low pressure turob as Mazda have done really does make it a nice smoth powerful engine.

Make no mistake this is not a rival to the likes of the Evo and Impreza but it is a fine alternative to the target market of BMW and Mercedes.

I'm not going to get into the whole Subaru vs ???? argument but needles to say a well fettled & driven Impreza can be pretty devastating.
