MOT Failure :(
Make sure you take the car somewhere else to have them replaced, if thats the case.
That way if he IS pulling a fast one, he hasn't benefitted from the "I can do that for you for 80 quid, mate"
..especially if he then takes a scourer to your lines to make them look new...

in all fairness if they are corroded he should not have to decide if its just a bit corroded or deep enough to be close to rupture, what does he gain compared to what he risks in this age of Litigation.
Ascot/Bracknell Honda has mentioned "corroded" rear brake lines to me in the past, and they were really nit picking, but I can understand why they mentioned it. When it comes to brakes and suspension I prefer to air on the side of caution.
I had a look at them, and couldn't get that annoying black plastic cover off which runs the length of the car
I'd like to clean them up and cover them in Waxoyl.

'corroded brake pipes' are the new 'pads and discs 95% worn'
just the latest scam that many garages have latched on to
everyone is scratching around for cash while we await the much vaunted economic recovery and this is just a symptom

I had similar last year.
"better keep an eye on that radiator mate, it's starting to corrode".
This year;
"no advisories this year sir"
'what about the corrosion on the radiator?'
"none that we can see sir?!?"

Rule No1., always take your car to the local DVLA test center run by the council, no repair shop = no axe to grind and a fair MOT and their techs aren't allowed to surgest where to get your car sorted if needed, they get struck off if they do.
Speaking of corroded brake pipes, I had quite a frightening incident with my daily car.
Basically, I was on a dual carriageway approaching a set of traffic light. When i got near to the lights it changed from green to amber, and I decided to stop for the lights. Due to the distance, I had to brake quite heavily. And guess what, the brakes failed, the car decelerated for a moment, and then suddenly sped up again passing the lights.
I was lucky that no car was in front of me, and I passed the lights just when it changed to red. The car had an advisory during the last MOT which is in November, and this incident happened in July. Basically, in this short period of time, the corrosion worsen, and the pipe walls can't take the additional pressure from my heavy braking and burst.
I'm not saying that you should get the pipes sorted whenever you get an advisory, but just want to highlight that this is not a situation that anyone would like to experience. A million and one scenarios pop up in my mind when I realized how lucky I am.
