After nearly 5 years, I sold the Pug for £500 and leased an Ibiza FR 1.6tdi for peanuts - it does 50mpg when I thrash it and a lot more when I just go with the flow in the slow lane - 73mpg on the 37 mile commute home yesterday.

As said above, do the maths - if you're driving on business you may well find your expenses will fund a second car.

I have an old bmw diesel estate for everyday stuff, it cost me £1800 and all I do is MOT it and put tyres on it. If I didn't need something as big I would get a small engined hatch and benefit from the extra MPG. As has been previously said, I can park where I like, I don't cringe when I hit a pothole it takes a lot of the stress out of driving when you don't care about your car.

Sit down with a pen and paper and work out the pros and cons before outright dismissing it.

Do a search for '1.6 diesel conversion'. You should be able to get 50mpg and keep the top down fun.

I run a shed special saxo 1.5 n/a diesel. Does wonders for economy! It's horrid to drive, lacks any kind of get up and go, driving it is generally an experience akin to being poked in the eye with a sharp stick. Because of all this though, my s remains tucked up in the garage not clocking up the miles and it's actually really economical most of the time

Seriously though, i don't think you'll be able to do anything to improve the economy, probably not something that Mr Honda had in mind when he had the s2000 on the drawing board.

Running a shed for a daily isn't es expensive as you'd first think .. might be worth considering?!

I dont understand why your company wouldexpect you to drive all over to country, on business, in your own car?!
They should be providing either a company car, or be allowing you to hire a car each tim eyou need to travel.

...You do know that driving your own car for business isn't normally covered by your personal insurance??

Agree with 2nd car option. My S was a DD but now I drive a 50 miles commute so bought a sub £1000 525 TDS SE for the motorway. It starts first time, drives straight and has really comfortable leather seats, l(like in most garage waiting areas). As I get mileage, it's actually paid for itself, and means when I get in the S at weekends (or on a sunny Friday like today), the enjoyment goes to 11...

Definitely the way to go I think.

Or if they don't then they have to pay your expenses at 18p a mile or whatever it's at nowadays, which would either make using the S cheaper or pay nicely for the fuel of your beater.
